Here is another early Mk4 show (only their seventh gig together) played at the
Milton Tennis Courts in Brisbane.... and it's a good one. "Anyone for tennis?"
says DC just before they kick into Burn.
Jon slips excerpts from Greensleeves, Hush and Waltzing Matilda into his solo.
Before they play This Time Around, Glenn's having a bit of fun, namechecking their security guys (Patsy Collins and Paddy Callaghan) and Ossy Hoppe. David says "It's lovely to be with you in Brisbane" after Drifter.
The recording is around 93 minutes long. The tape was flipped over 46 and a half minutes in (4 minutes into Jon's solo). The only downside is that HighwayStar is not complete.
I was 13 at the time and a big fan of Purple. I had my sister and her boyfriend take me. It was a fair size arena and been open air it was a fine and starry night. I remember stomping my feet to Smoke On The Water. Tommy Bolin has always been dear to my heart and his passing affected me in a big way being one of the first rock stars to have seen play and then know they won't be playing anymore can be devastating. I can remember his solo spot him playing around with his echo plex.
I can recall Jon's solo and everyone chuckling at a humorous bit that he playing. Ian's solo is still just in the memory banks as well. I think being young and impressionable it has been always with me, it was exciting going along to such a big event. Being an open air made it that much more special. Glenn's voice is unforgettable. I can't recall specific songs. 'You Keep On Moving' sticks out though being the end of the night.
I think things like Lady Luck stick out too been interested in things new and this been the album they were touring on. I asked my sister not long ago if she remembered taking me and she couldn't. I was listening to a lot of Mark IV stuff, having seen and met Glenn Hughes at the basement (you can see me in the vid too).
This line up was my introduction to Purple and I would say that it changed my life they remain my fave band and I even have four tattoos of Purple and Rainbow album covers on my arms. Milton tennis courts is no longer there it used to be a place that was used for international tennis events that were broadcast on TV.
It was a magic night no doubt about it; Tapes of the tour prove it isn't just a memory but a reality that the band was peaking on this tour.
