As one of this seasons highlights I was looking much forward to this gig.

I wasnt dissapointed, what an evening.

Dont miss this one, it captures everything of the best from Deep Purple

A band in great mood and a crowd at its very peak, responsive as in the best Purple spirit.

Anyway heres a setlist:

101 - Intro
102 - Highway Star
103 - Things I Never Said
104 - Wrong Man
105 - Strange Kind Of Woman
106 - Rapture Of The Deep
107 - Fireball
108 - Contact Lost ~ Steve's Solo
109 - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
110 - The Well Dressed Guitar
111 - Wring That Neck
112 - The Battle Rages On
201 - Don Airey Solo
202 - Perfect Strangers
203 - Space Truckin
204 - Smoke On The Water
205 - Hush
206 - Black Night

So, not really a surprising tracklist, all classics, even the intro.

I geared my H2 Zoom for this gig, using a 120 degree internal mic spread, to also capture audience, with the best intentions of getting this recording as close to how it felt to be among the much extatic crowd, but keeping a clear shot at the stage.
This H2 Zoom device really is a gem, it captures much more details than my own ears, - all instruments stading very clear here, - as the mixerboard decided the sound should be.

For those that are thinking of getting some recording gear, consider this gem.
If I load it with 2 Duracell batteries, and a 4 gigabyte SD card, itll run for 6 hours and 20 minutes, capturing in 44 Samplerate and uncompressed wave, its basically something like, set it, - switch it on, forget all about it, and when done a few hours later, switch it off, and itll have captured everything.

Can also record surround, but thats another story

Full gig, running for 102 minutes 3 seconds, also featuring the crowd's eager attempt of additional encore's - as an audience sing along of Black Night :-D

All sharp and clear

Coverarts by myself - but guys, start downloading right away

If you enjoy this, just as much as did being there and making this recording available, youll have a grand time

Copenhagen Classics

And why this name?
Well, there were a lot of classic themes involved in this evening

First of all, Deep Purple, In KB Hallen Is a classic in itself.

By far the most concerts of Deep Purple in Copenhagen has been executed here, at this more or less historic building, not least featuring the famous first ever fully filmed Mk2 concert at 1 March 1972 - Later the first Mk3 gig, with a very young and nervous David Coverdale.

So, long ago, I had decided to try the outmost to get a good recording of this one, and when I say good, I mean, the recording should get as close to actually being there as possible.

This off course involves a good recording device that has the capabilities, and having my loyal friend, the H2 zoom, I was pretty confident with the situation.

The venue, if you see it from the outside, is looking like the of a giant tube, it was originally designed for sports events of different kind and actually KB, stands for Kbenhavns Boldklub - (Football club of Copenhagen)

The circular layout is also present from inside, which actually is an asset if you want to record a good gig,
Theres no bouncing of sound against walls or anything like that, and finding my favorite spot, at the back, right corner, I have a good view to the stage, and certainly no walls behind me that can kick the sound in downwards direction.

I was a bit afraid, that a rather intoxicated guy not too far from us would yell and so, but I think he fainted way through the show.

Classic way to start an evening like this is to find a little spot where we (me and wifie) could have a little drink or so, and so be it, I had some classic Red Tuborg and wifie had some Cola, also classic type

So, as we found the venue, around 20 minutes walk from my work, we queued up, and also in very classic style they looking in my bag pack for recording devices or whatever, and as usual - no prob,

The warm up was some local band, and as wifie suggested i recorded it, I assured myself that the device was recording, so no worries about change of tapes or discs, no worries of battery consumption . just set it up, switch it on, put it where it wont be in the way, and forget all about it.

So, the warm up band (heywire) seemingly was invited as they say on their webpage, by purple, to warm up, as they were happy bout last time they did so (Jan 06)
Its a kind of 80's Light rock thing, lets in short terms it a very light weight Asia sort of style, but not really anywhere those guys standards

Its a task, to warm up a Purple audience with such an outfit, they struggled, had a good time and got the chance of showing their repertoire to the crowd, and thats really all there is to say

45 minutes of that, and the change of scene

Took them round an hour, where also the stage crew tested instruments and Mic's - a fun little sequence that I did capture, however not included to the bootleg.

So - round 21:15, lights go down, crowd in big enthusiasm cheers, but...

Then this piece of classic music - very dramatic starts, much preferred by me than to this "jump" thing theyve done before.
Wham, the initial chords hits us, and the steam goes up

Yep, Highway star is gearing up - a classic starter in terms
Remember Gillans words in 72 - We got a new song - it might stay as a starter for a few years..
Its still there
About a minute or so into it, it sounds like a little adjustment is made, as some of Steve's guitar sound gets a bit clearer, its easy to spot in the recording.

And then - Steve and Roggie spots someone, seemingly filming - gets to him, makes their headbanging to the tune as seen often before - a classic, but showing the communication between the crowd and the band - id love to see that clip one day if it pops up somewhere.

Crowd steaming moving on in the classic list - a couple of rather unknown songs to Wifie, but we hardliners know'em all
Things I never said never really my favorite whilst Wrong Man with its heavy shuffle, kicks much more

These tracks done with precision, without the big elegance though - surely worthwhile

I still dont know, perhaps I never will find out why Strange Kind Of Woman is still in the list.

Its a good track, but one of the peaks, throughout it cycle till now is the guitar / vocal battle, and the options are really not there for it anymore

Rapture of the Deep, never really was a favorite track for me neither - so it more like a routine thing to go through.

But then Ian introduces a folk song - and in a split second a very heavy bass filled drum intro to Fireball kicks on, it really fires up the audience, as I have the impression that they werent too enthusiastic about the slower / newer songs neither - I might be wrong, but Fireball kicks up the dust effectively

We then move on the moody parts of the concert, with Contact lost and Steve's weeping guitar licks.

Following gently into Sometimes I feel like screaming

I like this shift from the licks to Sometimes ... a lot
Rest of the crowd as well it seems, cause they certainly cheer up after the a bit moody licks from Steve.

It follows into The Well Dressed guitar, certainly a track that makes the crowd go upright bananas as they clap along - very visible from my viewing angle

A time for a little shift in tempo and style as we move into the more jazzy Wring That Neck, a track that I can only assume is taken in cause an instrumental duel like this, is some both Don and Steve enjoy.
Theyre smiling a lot and very obviously enjoying the track

After this little break in the classics, The Battle Rages on pops up - dramatic start with stage dimmed down - and some organ roar
One of my all time favorites, and Im so thrilled to hear it live, - I never before had the chance, but here it goes

At this point the audience is boiling well and singing along on a lot of the tracks - the communication between the band and the crowd is really up.

Its time for Don's solo
I myself must admit that I enjoyed Jon's much more, than Don's - Don is a fine musician, but lets compare, when Jon brought in a lot of inspiration from his roots in classics - Don plays Star wars...

This instance though, it was a bit more in some classic things, and certainly a Danish classic - Wonderful Copenhagen was incorporated
This follows very heavy into Perfect Strangers, in best classic style, The organ taking a monster deep earth quaking roar, much more vibrating than any sound that Roggie produced, and that was quite a lot

Perfect Strangers, as happens to be one of my all time favorites.

Space Truckin' well, it requires too much screamin' as is hard to produce, so it is really a question if this one shouldnt be taken off, but even so the audience along all the way.

So, were close to the end now - Steve fooling around with a few chords, until he much to peoples surprise fires up Michael Jackson's Billy Jean Riff

Roggie and Paice following along nicely, much to everyones enjoyment.
This off course as a tribute to MJ, as we all know about

Steve blurs the riff out, and shortly dives into the classic Smoke on the Water intro - and if there werent a crowd cheer before, then there is now
This is taking heights one can only understand the full extent of, if been there.
It rocks along in usual style, and when approaching the end - Gillan asks in usual way the crowd to sing along, and is immediately blasted back with a crowd so loud that even he looks ecstatic.

So, Shows over ?
Nah, a few handfuls of guitar picks thrown to the audience, and then a minute or 2 until the guys enter the stage again for the encores.
Hush gets more and more inventive as time goes by - this instance no exception, and as also introduced earlier on, in the mid of the song, guys pulling out to make way for a Paice solo, that is executed in the style of the one handle drum hurl - is marvelous show - and as they return to the stage Gillan jumping around as a kangaroo - really flying high this evening.
And breaking it out, into Rogers Bass solo, its incredibly powerful this as you hear it live - its one of those things you just gotta hear live - no bootleg, not even the peak performances can really capture it.
My wife looked at me round this stage and pointed her arms, saying Im getting goosebumps, this is amazing

The stage lights not really being something extraordinary during the show till now - suddenly opens up and throws itself into a tulip opening like sequence - as the band goes into the ground riff of Black Night
.
This is extatic, Crowd louder than any time before during the show - Singing along - obviously enjoying the show to the peak, even trying to bring out the band for an extra Encore, taking one a capella version of Black Night

Well, what did we just see here;

Although Purple has been running much of this road show the last three years, its still an amazingly powerful package, one that can only really be captured the full extent of if been at such gig.

I havent been in regret mood for one single second that we went there I believe that despite what a lot of people rumours about purple getting old and all that, its still one of the very best concert tickets you can get

So if you have a chance for a show go there

Enjoy
