Notes:
Another year, another night with the DLO3. Not sure what happened with Josh Perdue on guitar and
Sam Groveman on drums between now and May of '24, but they weren't hear tonight and seem to have
not been on the recent European tour or any of the shows in the US on this current tour. I'm not
sure if they're *out* or just not available, because I couldn't find any information mentioning
their parting ways, but in any case Delvon had these two new cats on stage: Brice Calvin on guitar,
and Chuck Pinckney on drums. I was uncertain about them at first since I rather liked how Josh
and Sam played, but Bruce and Chuck are both pretty damn good. I enjoyed Chuck's dynamics, and
I thought Brice's solos were slick.
Unfortunately, while Chuck's style was fine, he was unfortunately behind Space's house kit that
sounds like ass. The snare tends to ring too much, and the kick has neither punch nor body, but
rather has a strong resonent frequency of around 135Hz that drowns everything else out and turns
it into a flabby, boomy mess. Every time I see that emerald-green kit on stage I know I'm in for
lackluster drum sound. It sucks.
What didn't suck was the surprise inclusion of local Chicagoan and guitarist Charles Thomas for
most of the set starting on Buttered Popcorn, and what an introduction that was. That tune is
a definite highlight if you like fast-picked guitars and jams, because that's all this take on
it is; Delvon and Chuck vamp while Charles takes first solo followed by Brice. It's hot stuff.
Afterward Brice and Charles trade bars through the rest of the set. They played a little William
DeVaughn again before going into Move On Up, but this time it was nearly the whole tune, so I
tracked it separately. Good tape overall.
