Show Notes:
This was a totally different vibe than the previous night's show at the Highline Ballroom.
That show sort of peaked early, and was much more of a very loose "jam" feel that kept the
energy level at a pretty constant pace. This isn't necessarily a criticism, simply an
observation. The support act, "Chapter 2", provided a lot of energy to get the crowd
going and the place was packed by the end of their set. Three cheers for the band playing
another great standing room / General Admission bill, which always provides so much more
energy to the crowd and, in turn, the band. The floor at the Blender slopes gently down
toward the stage which makes it easy for the crowd to see the band BUT it does feel strange
standing on an angle all night - but all for a good cause. Kofi joined Chapter 2 during
the opener, and then the full Derek Trucks band took the stage around 9:30.
Compared to the previous night, this show was far more intense out of the gate, and
instead of lagging the energy level kept going up. Whereas "My Favorite Things" was a
bit of a yawner the night before, going off a bit too far into "jazz land", this night's
version was simply torrid with not just great solos all around, but the band really playing
off each other's improv really took this to the next level. The members of "Chapter 2"
came out and contributed to a few songs, notably the best performance of "Get Out of My
Life Woman" I've heard the band do, with Kofi and Nigel Hall swapping back and forth on
keys and even Yonrico temporarily relinquishing his kit for Adam Deitch.
All in all a great night, and the Empire State Building was totally nonpointy as it was
shrouded in fog. Topped off the evening with a slice of NYC's finest (maybe it really *is*
the water?) and all in all, a great time ... thanks to all!
I shot tons of video at the show, you can find it at:
