There was much rejoicing when it was announced that the Derek Trucks band were to feature at the second Adelaide International guitar festival. This was tempered by the fact that the first show ( of which they were headliners ) would be held in the main theatre, which has often poor sound . Also the time was to be shared with two other acts, meaning that each artist would play truncated sets. The poor pairing of acts and short sets was one of the main reasons that the festival made major losses and was slimmed down , so now it is a shadow of its former self and is held biannually, rather then annually.

So we got about 70 minutes of the DTB.The sound wasn't too bad, better then many acts seen at this venue which is really more of a orchestral hall than a rock venue. Its been worked on to improve the acoustics, but its still a bit of a hole sound wise and it can be highly variable. i have been to several shows where the sound was execrable and yet when the shows were heard on the radio ( or in one case, an aud tape taken from one of the front of stage fill speakers) showed that the soundboard mix was superlative. Either the house PA speakers or the acoustics of certain parts of the hall were to blame. So,even though we were dead centre and in the sweet spot , when Derek and the band really got cooking towards the end of the set, there were a few times when it sounded a bit harsh. I have judiciously taken the volume down on the last couple of tracks by 2/3 db using Audition's Spectral tools, this has reduced slight distortions due to the overloading of the PA and the lack of a preamp to use with the ECM 150, which was better suited to lower sound levels and acoustic shows.Still a nice set , I have heard far worse on the live Music Archive , the playings hot, so its definitely worth a listen !
