There was much rejoicing when it was announced that the Derek Trucks band were to feature at the second Adelaide International guitar festival. This was tempered by the fact that the first show ( of which they were headliners ) would be held in the main theatre, which has often poor sound . Also the time was to be shared with two other acts, meaning that each artist would play truncated sets. The poor paring of acts and short sets was one of the main reasons that the festival made major losses and was slimmed down so now it is a shadow of its former self and is held biannually, rather then annually.
However, the second show, held in the foyer of the festival theatre rechristened the Wah Bar especially for these events, held more promise . And so it proved, the band played a much longer show, split into two sets in front of a much smaller crowd than they would normally front , probably 300 to 400 maximum .
A standing show , which allowed close access to the stage . for set one we were standing more or less in front of Derek. The cored for set one were generally very quiet, the sound was excellent , with the only downside being that the vocals were rather subdued in the mix.
For set two, we moved a but further back to try to hear the vocals more clearly , unfortunately some new arrivals had moved in and they were somewhat noisy at the start of several tracks, its only for a short period and quite a lot of the crowd chatter has been removed or toned down in the this remix. Vocals have also been enhanced . Derek is in top form , its a great show and we were privileged to witness the band close up and in such a small intimate venue.
Enjoy.
