The performance:
After arriving a half hour late to last year's show at Del Mar, I made it a point to arrive 3 hours early when the track opened.
I've really been anxious to see and experience an entire Devo concert after hearing great things from friends. A very taught and
energetic set from the boys at Hollywood Park's North Lawn performed after the track's last night race @ 10:30. The only thing I
would knock the band for is that the set over the past two years has been static. Sorry no "Monster Man" live premiere here. Still,
the band are having a blast here and they didn't miss a beat. They definitely are not going through the motions when they perform.
Booji Boy's account of a coked up party horse that had to be put down was awkward to say the least. I'm not sure that the spuds
will be invited back to the track next year. Poor Snorty Boy. Geez!
The recording:
I've got to tell you, I had very low hopes for any sembelance of a decent recording. First, outdoor venues are the bane of my taping
existence. Attendees (let's not call them an audience) bring their outdoor voices like they're sixth graders on a playground during
recess. Second, free or nearly free shows bring out a ton of a$$holes that drink a dozen beers, push their way to the front and act
astonished when the die hards that were waiting patiently and peacefully for 3 hours get pissed. Third, the sound system is usually
pretty sub standard and designed to withstand the rain rather than produce audible music. Fortunately, one and two happened before the
show actually started for the most part. One chick guilty of both got the message to move away from me when I gave her that serial
killer stare (see X: Billy Zoom). As for three, the sound system was not half bad.
So what is here actually sounds pretty amazing. Sometimes the planets align. Vocals are at the for and instrumentation is clear and
fairly well balanced. There is little to virtually no chat, no howlers, no screamers, no whistlers, no cupped hand clappers on mic.
How the hell did this happen under the worst circumstances amidst 3000+ people including a mosh pit that opened up during "Uncontrollable
Urge" and two crowd surfers that cruised past me during "Mr. DNA"? Who the hell knows? Just grab it before the taping gods change their
minds. Phasing occurrences are from the band's presentation not from passerbys.
To Mr. Ziegler (Devo Archivist Extraordinaire): My mics are probably still fucked up and out of phase like the JKL recording in 2010.
I'm running the same rig. Still, I hope that you have it in your heart to give this a favorable rating on Huboon.com. Even us taper's
appreciate a little validation every now and then. Sorry in advance.
Items thrown into the audience by Mark / Booji...

Note to tapers:
If a girl comes your way during the show and decides to chat you up, just proposition her. If she says that she's here with her boyfriend,
tell her "That's O.K. he can watch." Either she'll leave or she won't. It's a win-win!
Enjoy Your Freedom!
