The performance:
The individual or collected minds that decided to book Devo for Los Angeles' 100th Anniversary of it's
Natural History Museum were either ironically brilliant or completely clueless. Jerry reaffirms the band's
40 year old treatise on the De-evolution of mankind throughout the show. A matter that both Creationism and
Darwinism seem ill equipped to address. What may have begun as rather arcane joke amidst Mark, Jerry and
three guys named Bob (Yes there was a Bob 0 at one point in time) on the Kent State campus became reality
over the years as man surrendered his intelligence and common sense for the convenience and trappings of
modern life.
The spud boys played an unexpectedly loose set in front of 2000+ museum patrons, hip-hop fans and party goers.
In other words a typical L.A. crowd. The guys didn't take the stage until 10:00 P.M. on a Sunday night. Most of
the tater tots were gone by then. If not due to the late hour then certainly by GZA's profanity-fueled opening set.
Interestingly, most of the remaining attendees saved the good stuff until the boys came on. Too funny! The spuds,
namely Bob 2 had a few issues playing to the click for the opening numbers. In fact my friend stated afterward that
he looked winded for most of the set. After all, these guys are north of 60 now. Still, they are teenagers compared
to The Who and The Stones. Which reminds me, the mid set songs ("Planet Earth", "Satisfaction" and "Secret Agent Man")
were parsed bringing the run time down to 75 minutes or so. What we do get is a rather impromptu version of "Jerkin'
Back And Forth"; a song that Jerry states that the band hasn't played live in 30+ years (Devotees state that it has
been 17 years). Nevertheless, this recording is a must for both Devotees and pedestrian fans alike.
Booji imagines a Beautiful World in which all the fossils, skeletons an stuffed animals come to life an join in the
night's fesitivities. If memory serves me, I already saw that movie, twice. Needless to say, it made everyone that
remained to the end feel better about sitting in the hot sun for six hours.
The recording:
A solid pull from an elevated vantage point 50 to 60 feet back from center stage. Most of the audience clapping and
cheering is far enough from my mics to make this a near perfect recording. That being said, there is a rather annoying
hum caused by a looose lead on stage during the first minute or so of "That's Good". The asynchronous playing is a bit
disconcerting for the first half of the set. By the time they get to "Whip It", the guys seem to get it together by that
point. A song that I am sure that any one of them can play in their sleep. Mark and Jerry's vocals are very clear and to
the fore. I really look forward to Bob 1 playing "Secret Agent Man" half way through. Sadly, this performance has been
jetisoned recently.
