NOTES:

Alright, time for a show 2 years in the making. Cruel World, and hence, DEVO, were supposed to have originally happened/played back in May of 2020, but then it got postponed until September of 2020, then it was cancelled outright, and then it was re-announced earlier this year for this May, 2 years after initially being brought into this (cruel) world. Fast forward through 2 years of bullshit, and lots and lots of de-evolution, and this show was entirely worth the wait and then some.

This marked my 4th time seeing these guys (and it was Josh Freese back on drums), and the spuds were out in full force this time. I saw countless energy domes, in all colors, including the iconic red, the obscure blue, some hand painted (?) silver, and even some that were all black, which were quickly dubbed the "goth Devos" (sort of fitting for this festival). The crowd was pretty large for this performance too. I remember looking back at one point (I was dead center, right in the "pocket" in front of the stage, with my back on the railing) and I all I could see was a sea of people spanning every nook and cranny of the Brookside golf course, staring back at the stage and these old guys up on stage. There were even people lined up along the guard rail on the road that parallels the venue.

I made some new friends, and saw some old ones during this show, including good ol' Stacie (who came all the way from Phoenix for this show - and though that may seem "far", I met people who had travelled from the East Coast (Florida, North Carolina, etc) as well), who if you've listened to past recordings of mine, I'm sure you'll recognize the voice, though I don't think she shows up on this one. Most of my friends and festival crew (I say "most", not all) know better than to talk to me during a set, thankfully.

The set started with the same short film that was played before their L.A. show back in September (at the new YouTube theatre), and though it's funny, for a festival set, I think it's a bit unnecessary, as it cuts into the already shortened set time, and as you guessed it, because they played the video, they had to cut their set short right after "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA". I'm sure they were planning on playing either "Gates of Steel" and/or "Freedom of Choice", but it was not to be this night. Still, they sounded great, the crowd was completely mesmerized, and it may have been the best sounding performance of theirs I've seen yet (even if it was cut short).
