Devon Allman
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 2, 2015

I'm not going to be able to record as much this year. I'll try to get all the major acts and some favorites I've had over the years. Again, KBOO FM is broadcasting the show live. KBOO is an all volunteer station. All proceeds from the festival go to the Oregon Food Bank so please donate if you can. They also have a live stream on the internet. It's an MP3 stream. My set up is an old Technics Quartz Tuner> H2 Zoom> SD card> computer> TLH.

The dirty blond hair is the same, the body posture is also the same, and there are touches in the voice that have a similar genetic connection, but DEVON ALLMAN has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his mega-famous dad, GREGG ALLMAN.

In fact, DEVON, who was raised in Texas by his mom (Shelly, not Cher), took up the guitar on his own, and did not meet his father until he was 15 years old. I sent him a short letter saying, Hey, its me. Heres where Im at. Im playing guitar, says DEVON. I got a phone call three days later.

There are traces of his father in his soulful voice and his uncle Duane Allman in his innovative guitar playing.

According to DEVON, the name both helps and hurts. There will always be fans who come to see him out of curiosity, But they leave having a respect for the fact that I am my own entity.

The trick for me is to not get caught up thinking about the impact that my dad and uncle (Duane) had on this genre of music. That could make me go completely insane. Focusing on that interferes with my path and art. The best thing for me to do is to concentrate on being the best musician I can be regardless of who my family is.

After a decade with his band, Honey Tribe, and more recently Royal Southern Brotherhood his brilliant collaboration with Mike Zito and Cyrill Neville DEVON is now carving his own path. That path has frequently overlapped with his Dads of late, and when it does, as it will at Waterfront Park July 2, the musical reunions by all accounts have been joyous.

After spending much of his adult life on the road as the driving force behind his bands Honeytribe and Royal Southern Brotherhood, Devon Allman is finally taking a moment to step back and reflect on it all. The result is TURQUOISE, Devons first solo album mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Gaines that doubles as an autobiographical narrative put to music. BLUES ROCK REVIEW
