THE STORY
At times listening to The Dillards may seem more like an old Homer & Jethro album or a Smothers Brothers routine because this quartet combined witty banter, great pickin', and vaudeville comedy to make for some of the folk era's most interesting shows. It isn't hard to understand why someone like John Hartford would be drawn to them (and vice versa), and this early recording from an undated show in Huntington Beach, California shows their ability to hold a folk-loving audience in the palm of their hand through extended jokes, repeating schtick, and some darned fine bluegrass pickin', the best of which is probably in Set 3.
I retracked this so it might be a little easier to seperate the comedy and banter from the actual songs, and in the hopes that some of this might pop up on your favorite local homegrown radio station. Seriously, burn a nice clean copy and sent it to them because they're never going to find this anywhere else. ENJOY!
