comments:
The recording begins at the start of the show but track 1 is cut in the middle (spliced) and track 2
cuts in. I'm not sure if any more than that is missing, but this is most of a hot Dixie Dregs set, the
only one I ever saw. Storm Warning opened the show, we didn't record them. It sounds pretty good, not one
of my best. Don't know these titles very well, except Take it Off the Top > Disco Dregs > Dixie encore
medley, and Cruise Control and The Bash. The crowd was in the mood for the Dixie Dregs and very
enthusiastic, rather loud between songs but not overbearing during the songs. Steve Morse has been very
popular in Boston for a long time, playing a few shows through the 80's with his own group (which for awhile
included DD drummer Rod Morgenstein, who is very good.) At least a couple called this music what Mahavishnu
Orchestra would have sounded like in they had decided to be a country music group. 79 and 80 seem to be the
hottest period for this group (77 and 78 also very good music) which doesn't really sound like anybody, except,
Dixie Dregs. This is a good thing, one of 2 I have to share from them. The other is a full late show from
the same place, next year (1981). There's a little country/bluegrass/rock and roll/hillbilly jamnmin' all
rolled up into a ball of fun and a good time was had by all at this show. I don't remember for sure if this
was a sold out house or not, but if not, close to, there were alot of people psyched to hear the DD in 1980
in Boston. They may have added a second show (by popular demand) but the ad for this concert lists just 1 show
starting at 8:30. I know they did in 1981 because that one I have is the late show. Not sure about this one.
We may have tried to see the show and found out they had to add a second because the early one sold out. I
helped record this, not sure if I held the mike or the deck, only that me and a friend recorded it, and he
has the master tape. I was always afraid of wearing out my tapes and never played masters on hungry or cheesy
tape decks, (except sometimes to record the master if nothing better was available) so this tape has held up
well over the 27 years.
Do not sell this recording.

comments:
This appears to be the complete late show of the Dixie Dregs in Boston. There is some level variation
in a part of Cruise Control on the right side, other than that it's quite enjoyable sound quality, very
little crowd noise this time. It's a good show too, but not as high energy as the 1980 I'm also posting.
(same place, previous tour). This one has Mark O'Connor on the violin, I think the other one is before
he joined. It's a little different flavor of Dixie Dregs than the 1980 show but still fine playing,
sounds like Mark was fitting in fine. The tape was flipped just after Punk Sandwich ends and I didn't
notice anything missing. I spliced it so you may not even notice a tape flip at all (that's always my
intention) Those folks who like to cram these things onto 1 disc may be able to do that with this,
but I don't (unless it's a convenient smooth fit) so this is as all my 1st time seeds, an unedited
version. There was a shutoff of the recorder during the encore break so the initial set is seamless
and complete ending with a fadeout on the 1st disc with 8:47 of encore to go on another. The 1st time I
remastered these I put them together on 2 discs, but didn't ever upload those, didn't like that arrangement
or the sound of the remaster. I think this version is an improvement over the first one, and the 1st time
I've ever seeded these, but since I've lost contact with both sources of these tapes I don't know if either
has been uploaded before by them, or friends of. I do know, if you like the Dixie Dregs with Mark O'Connor,
you should enjoy hearing this. I did not see this show. The taper is a Dregs fan and did a good job.
he is the same source who had his masters stolen of Gentle Giant and Bruford's late shows, before anyone I
know could get copies, fortunately I was able to get a copy of this one which I believe to be from his master.
too bad he lost his masters, I saw the early shows of those which have been posted here on dime (the Gentle
Giant one was first posted by Doinker from my master, before I knew how to upload, not by me yet.)
The fingerprints for this are in seperate folders, because I was going to up these seperately, then decided
not to in case anyone wants to put these onto 2 CD's, since this is a little over 80, the other a little under.
I think it can be done (without any editing) but it will be a cram. I could have tried to CD extract this thing,
save me four or five hours remastering time. So I tried, and there was a problem so I had to say those 2 WORDS again.
New transfer. For both of these, no CD, no DAT, nothing but 1st gen. cassette lineage here for both shows.
Do not sell this recording.
