Completely enjoyable Saturday night with the Mrs. in downtown Roxboro, NC., about a
45-minutes drive due north from our home in Chapel Hill. This was probably my 15th or
so time seeing our great American legend Doc Watson, and although he just recently turned
88 years young, Doc sounded great and was "feeling his oats", as David Holt told him
after they finished Roll On Buddy. There are many musical highlights this evening, but
for me, hearing Doc's haunting yodel during Jimmie Rodger's "In The Pines" is always the
standout moment of any show, as it was tonight.
Besides David Holt and Richard Watson, T Michael Coleman joined Doc on electric bass
for the first set and a majority of the second. This was my first time seeing Michael
with Doc, and I have to say that his rythmn and strong "bottom" gave all the pickers a
more precise space for their solos. To my humble ears, this made Doc's playing more focused
and dynamic, with many of his solos just flat-out, flat-pickin' SMOKING. In addition, Michael
told some great stories about how he got invited to play with Doc and Merle, and meeting and
playing with the legendary Chet Atkins.
As has been the case the past few times I've had the honor of seeing Doc in person, his recall
of the lyrics on several of the songs are interrupted by "senior moments", but David usually
jumped in to finish singing the song, or Doc just picked another solo until the words came back to him.
This was my first attempt to record a show using my new Sony PCM-M10 digital recorder - upgrading from
my old Sony Mini-disc recorder - and I have to say that I am pleased at the results. I believe that you'll
find the recording level is a little low, so you'll have to turn it up a bit when you listen.
The Kirby Theater is old-timey movie theater turned concert hall in the center of Roxboro's downtown
district, and the crowd was very attentive and appreciative of the evening's performance. I reckon
there were a lot of family and friends in attendance as there were a few "shout outs" during the show.
A few last notes... we ran just a few seconds late, so you'll hear me RUNNING up the balcony steps as Doc
is about to sing the first words of the opening tune. It takes a few more seconds for my wife and me to
settle into our seats, but I hope you'll agree that the rest of the recording is very nice. Samples are
attached and your comments are really appreciated. Also, David was having issues with his guitar pickup on
a few tunes, so that's why you can't really hear him on a few tunes.
As always, please feel free to share this with anyone you'd like, re-edit the sound, or convert to
whatever file format that suits you. And of course, it's really bad karma to sell this to anyone, so don't
even think about it !
Enjoy !
