Don Henley
Three things you need to know about Don Henleys marathon two-hour, 35-minute show at the Sony Centre on Tuesday night.
1. The 68-year-old Eagles drummer-singer-songwriter, currently touring in support of his first solo album in 15 years, Cass County, is a long-winded storyteller.
2. But theyre really good stories. (Like the one about Merle Haggard - who sings on Cass County - going on a Hawaiian vacation with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. You know what theyre doing and its not the health shake.
3. And dont ever tell him to hurry up.
Case in point: As the evening was winding down Henley was introducing the most autobiographical song, on Cass County (named for the Northeastern part of Texas where he grew up a small town boy putting pennies on the train tracks and going to see cowboy movies in the local cinema for ten cents) when a female fan shouted out: 11 minutes Don!
His perfect response? I dont give a sh-t.
To explain, Henley had earlier told the crowd he had 11 minutes to cram two songs into the encore as midnight approached, ending the night with his oldie but goodie All She Wants To Do Is Dance which prompted a few brave people (no photography or video taking was allowed) to get up and shake a leg.
So Henley took his sweet time and finished telling the story before performing Train in The Distance, from the longer, bonus edition of Cass County, in one of the shows biggest highlights.
Dont mess with Texas is right, and especially not in the middle of a good yarn.
The leisurely and low-key evening of music and stories also began memorably.
About 35 vintage radios were suspended overhead on the stage and each time a spotlight was shone on one, a snippet of a song or speech came out - from James Browns I Feel Good to Richard Nixons Im no crook speech.
Then Henley, who alternated between playing acoustic and electric guitars, and his ten piece band - which expanded to as many as 15 with a kick-ass horn section as the night progressed - walked on stage and crowded around microphones to sing a beautiful a capella version of Seven Bridges Road, often performed by The Eagles.
But that was the only shout-out to his day job - although Eagles touring guitarist Steuart Smith was in the lineup - as Henley kept the set list to Cass County songs, his 80s solo back catalogue and a few choice covers ranging from Screamin Jay Hawkins I Put A Spell on You (beefed up by those horns) to Tears For Fears Everybody Wants To Rule The World with some standout solo guitar work by Chris Holt.
Sandwiched in between were some great stories, one-liners and songs including New York Minute, Dirty Laundry, The Heart of the Matter, and The Boys of Summer while Lily Elise, one of his three female backup singers, joined him on the break out duet Bramblin Rose (a Tift Merritt cover).
