Donald Byrd - Jazz Workshop Boston, FM 73-09-04 (reseed with fixes)

Here's one Donald Byrd nugget! Born Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II in Detroit, this WBCN show was recorded at a time when his band included (pre) Blackbyrds members Toney, Kilgo, Perry, & Barnes, and Donald was riding high with his chart hit "Flight Time". A diverse and excellent 1st set of the night at The Jazz Workshop, there's alot of stretching out on this rare "live" look at Byrd in the early 70's. All Praise to the original recorder, and to seeders Carville / Allsoundz !

All the best in Music!

EN remaster notes
12.9.2014
It's Donald Byrd's 82nd birthday, and although he left us just last year I thought I'd not hesitate to keep the flame alive with a remaster of this utterly lush FM reel the estimable Mr. Jazamo (a certain DIME Hall of Famer) reposted a few years back... see his very detailed notes above. It was recorded exceptionally well (if a bit staticky in the between-song parts) and only required some dynamic enhancements to the bottom end, which I supplied via Sound Forge 9. I also used some noiseprinting to minimize the truly irritating frequencies of the outburst of crosstalky static that takes place between the first two songs, but applied no such treatment to the music on either side of it. Towards the last minute of the last tune things started to get a little background-noisy, so I did apply 4db of noise reduction there, but it's totally unnoticeable in my headphones. I left everything else as is, except for rejoining the fade containing the repeating segment of applause between the last two songs, fixing a couple of dropouts and retitling/tagging the files. And also creating new md5s/fingerprints and updating this info file. Thanks to the musicians, the radio station, the taper for such a sweet capture so long ago, plus Carville, Allsoundz, Jazamo and RandyBayers who seeded and reseeded it originally and repeatedly. I hope this sizzling, scorching set documenting the Good Doctor and his young Blackbyrds-to-be funks you in a deep and satisfying way -- the first song alone is so blazing it's amazing they didn't have to call the fire trucks in -- for years to come! And Happy Birthday Dr. Donald Byrd, who'd have been 82 today but is still destined to live forever no matter the numbers.
