Donovan - Lostbrook 2.0 Volume 3
I had promised myself not to buy any more tickets until my external mics arrived, but when I saw that Donovan was going to appear at The Hamilton, I was intrigued. I visited Donovan's web site and read, "Donovan To Play 3 Concerts In USA To Celebrate His Rock Hall Induction." When I read, "The 3 concerts are more like a party as the real tour follows in The Spring of 2013," I was sold. While this was a bit of an impulse buy, I knew I had to be there. However, after I bought the tickets, I started to second-guess myself. I hadn't followed Donovan's career since his 1977 performances(Lostbrook Tape Series Volumes 6, 39, 120, and 122) when he opened for Yes. I had no idea what he was going to sound like 35 years later. I was hoping for a solo acoustic performance but was expecting a full band. As it was only a few days until the show, I didn't do any further research. If I had, I would have been greatly encouraged by some youtube clips that I found afterwards.
I went through my rolodex of concerts and couldn't think of another show that I would describe this way: this performance was an absolute gift from Donovan to the audience. Donovan began with, "Tonight I'm going to walk you through the journey that led to here..." and proceeded to weave tales before, during, and after his songs that transported us to a unique time and place in musical history. He delivered a mesmerizing 90-minute solo acoustic performance with a slide-show backdrop before returning with a band for an excellent 45-minute set.
Find a quiet place to listen to this in its entirety. You'll find yourself drifting away to tales of Gypsy Dave, Woodie Guthrie, The Beatles, Joan Baez, and more.
Donovan is appearing tonight, October 19, 2012 in New York City.
