I woke up on the "off day" to emails, text messages and voicemails
asking if I was ok after the bombing. I wanted to say I would never
be caught dead at an Ariande Grande show but not really the best
response all things considered. Different city an different band but
I was checking in with everyone who responded and I said I I would
be careful. Meanwhile Scooter123 and I are planning and thinking of
a game plan. We came up with a number of scenarios and were prepared
to take a taxi back to get more low profile gear if necessary. While
we were strategizing we were both independantly enjoying the off day.
For me the day was spent sightseeing, pubcrawling and walking. I chose
to walk rather than take the tube subcionsiously thinking it was safer. I
walked to the Hard Rock. They have some great memorabilia and the Vault
has some priceless pieces. I had to set sight on a real Jimi Hendrix
guitar and some of the other priceless pieces. After the Vault I went in
for a beer and a bite to eat at the Hard Rock cafe. I had mt Stones
Desert Trip shirt and ran into 2 American's at the bar. We were all
chatting and the Manchester thing was on everyone's mind. On the news
the threat level was at its highest level in 10 years. One of the
American's was heading to Manchester for a concert and said he felt
security would be so tight it would be safe. I mentioned I taped concerts
and I needed to bring recording gear through security and failed one
very rare occasions. After we were done, he had a look of fear and an
understanding his safety was up to him, not security. Meanwhile I had
some people try and disuade me from trying warning of an international
incident. I told them I came to London to record Clapton and it was go
big or go home. Scooter123 and I concluded first try was to try and get
two full rigs inside using our best techniques going in on our own and
meeting inside. I will not diclose the secret but I saw an easy way and
went in basically unsearched. Scooter123 followed me in and we were
pretty sure we were safe. Once we saw the wands being deployed outside
of where we were we knew we were safe. Next stop Stella Artois bar.
My seat was in the 14th row just off dead center and Scooter123 was 6
rows behind me. I noticed how much better Doyle sounded and the set
was much better than the firt night. Not being in the 5th row and being
in the center meant the hard part was done. At this point we realized
that we were well prepared and confident going to the last night since we
didn't need to try even the first alternate scenario besides our first try.
The set was still about 45 minutes long and between sets made a quick run
to the bathroom and waited in the bar to minimize visibility.
The Eric Clapton set was generally better than the first night in my opinion
but no Bell Bottom Blues. Besides the omission it was the same setlist. The
songs which were the highlights for me seemed just a bit tighter than the
first night. After we walked out and down to the Hoop and Toy pub the adrenaline
rush kicked it. We were in a celebratory mood and we drank a number of rounds
to celebrate a night well done.
