comments:
This was an interesting couple of days- the afternoon acoustic set was a free set, so if
I could hop on the T I could see what kind of a live act these guys are. I was still very
new to these guys from Atlanta, Ga. but they had already made an impression as yet another
good Southern American rock band with a current hit at this time "the Innocent". That
one was very catchy. They also had Build a Fire and Fly Me Courageous on the hit charts at
this time, here you get an acoustic and electric version of all 3 current hits. The acoustic
show was delayed a bit to get sound together, and probably for the band to wake up. These guys
don't exactly seem like morning people, but I did get a good idea of what their music is like.
They had played the Paradise several times before this, but this may have been around the height
of their popularity, and they were welcomed pretty warmly at the acoustic show, even more so for
the evening one since with a free concert, alot of people go just because it's free even if they
don't like the music in it. Most at this one seemed to dig it. Some of that crowd were just
shopping for discs and records (yeah, they still sold vinyl in 91 at HMV records including
a few by D&C) and the Paradise one was a rockin' good time, a few mellow/acoustic songs included
in the Saturday show too (all pretty good ones) and I thought a very inspired, tight electric set.
They are good at the mellower stuff too but these guys were meant to rock, and give you a nice
version of (Queen's) "We will rock you" near the end of the Saturday show. Very fitting for them,
they rocked good and loud, but not too loud for a clear recording. The crowd noise is not
overbearing either. If you haven't heard of D & C, they have several releases out and are worth a
listen (at least), I liked these shows a lot and I think you will too, now being seeded for the
1st time ever in 3 step torrent style (Master > WAV > FLAC > torrent. No tape or digital "generations"
of transfer involved). Drivin' 'n cryin' is not an easy thing at all to do, (I know from experience)
but they are easy to listen to if you like a band that rocks, which I do sometimes. They rock,
and seem to enjoy doing it. The acoustic set had a few awkward moments but overall, not a bad set
at all, especially for free. Although WBCN was all over this like a wet blanket (and almost
anything rock in Boston in the 80's and early 90's.), I don't know that either of these were
broadcasted. WBCN was into this thing around this time of faking a live broadcast intro, then
going to playing records. But alot of folks quickly got tired of that cheap hype tactic and it
was soon phased out.
There is 1 flip cut in the acoustic set, none in the electric one. This torrent is as such
partly because these 2 sets will fit on 2 discs, and partly because they go together, as
consecutive days shows that let you hear the acoustic and electric talent of a good band.
the electric set starts, appropriately enough, with "turn it up or turn it off".
The recording quality is consistent, but there is some variance of the sound quality in both sets,
mainly due to mix and room acoustics, such as some feedback in a bit of "the innocent" acoustic
version. If you haven't heard this band in concert, here's a good place to start, and if you like
D & C and haven't heard these sets, you should. The Saturday set has a fadeout after Fly Me
Courageous (track 18) and fadein to track 19 (tape flip) which is convenient if burning to disc-
both these shows will fit on 2 74 minute discs if you put tracks 19-22 after (or before if you prefer)
the acoustic set as I did. I think the 1st 18 tracks are the initial set, the rest are encores.
(the 1st one is a nice version of Bill Wither's classic Ain't no Sunshine, going into one of their songs)
It's all here except a couple of seconds for the flip in the acoustic show 45 min. into it. That track
is spliced into one. I have not used any EQ or processing to this, only level balancing and some ICPVR
(individual clap peak volume reduction). Ironically, the first Glasnost Radio Production was just around
this time, this was not it. It was, however, practice, for future Glasnost Radio Productions. The
advantage of these little mikes was to get elevated enough for good sound, without obstructing anyone's
view or sound of the concert. At shows like these, with alot of people and a loud rockin' band, that
advantage helps for less mike obstruction too and clearer sound for you and me to hear. This was a 1st
time seed directly from this master source in 2008.
Do not sell these recordings.
Trade freely and losslessly.
And please don't talk on the phone while you're drivin' 'n' cryin' (if in a car)
some of us want to live to see tomorrow.
