hi, here is (probably) a new and uncirculated source of the Eagles show from May 7th 1977 in Munich on their famous "Hotel California" Tour and is now coming to light after almost 50 years!
First of all I have to say that I really like the show and recording and after having it in my vault for over 20 years, it has now been rediscovered. You don't have to be a big Eagles fan and yet the songs and many hits are probably familiar to everyone and it's a great pleasure to hear them live.
I'm also pleased that there were no technical problems with the recording on this evening in May, as there were at a concert at the end of February of the same year, for example. Same venue. Different band. So this show is almost complete and very well documented. The quality is very good.
Perhaps we can speak here of the "classic line-up" with Frey, Henley, Felder, Meisner and Walsh. The already much discussed and extensively documented interplay between Felder and Walsh is always great to listen to and - of course - the vocal harmonies of all of them are fantastic.
And: Randy Meisner is also unique on this evening with HIS Take It To The Limit. Lovely.
However, it's not just their big hits that inspire on this evening.
Turn To Stone - as an example- is also an absolute highlight for me on this evening and Joe Walsh gives it his all:-)
Unfortunately, the recording stops at Best of My Love after about 45 seconds. The show was recorded on 2x60min AGFA Super Color Tapes and there was probably a fear of not making it to the end of the whole concert. Anyone who has ever taped on cassette knows this problem of catching the exact moment of the tape change.
The fact that there was still air on the tapes at the endis history.
At the end, they also played Chuck Berry's Carol, which didn't happen too often on the Hotel California tour in 1977 and over 50 concerts.
Another nice and interesting anecdote about the show. As far as I have heard and understood correctly, I believe it is Henley who, before they start Life in the Fast Lane, announces this song in an unusual way. Of course they are in Germany. And perhaps the reference to one of the biggest and most important German bands is a deliberate one? Note.
"This Song is called.........." ( i know and understand the word in german of course, but maybe a litte "Surprise" for you.);-)
Of course, it could also refer to the approx. 800 kilometres (ca. 500 Miles) from Hamburg to Munich in general.
But maybe they also took the aeroplane;-)
But listen for yourself:-)
If you want to know more, I can recommend this wonderful website. There are also many photos of the 1977 German tour.
