i had earmarked this set as a "don't miss" for bonnaroo 2010 and i wasn't disappointed. this merry troupe of neo-hippies and vagabonds are almost tailor-made for bonnaroo's almost-anything-goes aesthetic and overarching vibe of getting loose and dirty in the hot tennessee sun. other reviews i've read about this set mention the ramshackle nature of the show, implying that there may not have been a setlist at play here. that seems about right, but i think the show was better for it in the long run. the crowd was clearly familiar with the songs and lots of audience interaction and singalongs made it feel like the biggest campfire singalong without a campfire i'd ever attended.
what i haven't seen mentioned in other reviews was what i perceived to be some frustration on ebert's part with the rest of the band in terms of keeping the show moving along. some of his onstage patter seemed to indicate that the rest of the band wasn't prepared, and the gaps between some songs seem to indicate that was the case. were they tripping? just out of sync because there wasn't a setlist? hard to say, but instead of being annoying, the end result was endearing. the only complaint i had was the short duration of the set. they were slated to play for an hour but only managed to cover off on seven songs in about 40 minutes when all was said and done. and that's a shame, because the audience was clearly ready for more.
