This concert was first released on YouTube by Sergio Pigo on November 10, 2022. Many people from Elton John's community requested a lossless file, and the taper kindly agreed and shared his tape in lossless format.
This tape contains one of the earliest performances recorded in 1973 during Elton John's 'Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player' tour. Elton John performed in Italy for the first time, as they couldn't play there the previous year (1972) due to cancellations. During this era, 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' was in its very early creative stages.
The tape itself is most likely taken from a Master tape (Still unknown if it is). The taper insists that he recorded it on a "musicassette by a little portable recorder" in his own words.
One fascinating aspect of the concert was the evolution of the song 'Love Lies Bleeding.' Originally intended as a separate composition from 'Funeral For a Friend,' it was later fused musically, resulting in the powerful combination we know today. The lyrics underwent significant changes during this period, with lines such as 'Everything about this house, have to live and die,' 'Oh, it was only about a year ago to this very day,' and 'Well, it kills me to think of you with another man.' The song 'Candle In The Wind' also evolved during this time.
One fan, Anna, shared her memories of the show, recalling the magical moment when Elton John emerged from the 'lion's den' - the ladder from which the performers ascended onto the stage. Clad in a multicolored cape that cascaded down to his feet and adorned with a magnificent basket of flowers in the shape of an inverted cone on his head, Elton John epitomized the flamboyance and theatricality for which he became renowned. Anna also marveled at his ever-changing glasses, which she described as incredible and colorful, mirroring the vibrant personality that shone through his music and fashion choices.
This concert is very special because it is the only recorded concert from the entire tour before the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' tour!
Happy 51th anniversary of this show!
