Review:
Elton John Pepsi Center show in Denver
By Daniel Petty | September 21st, 2014

Anyone who has watched Elton John through decades knows him to be the quintessential showman. And his
Saturday concert at the packed Pepsi Center shows that even at 67 years old, his strong voice remains,
his love for a raucous crowd endures, and his fingers can still skip across a grand pianos keys with
ease and vigor.

Wearing his trademark rose-colored glasses and a glittery blue suit, John explored his greatest hits,
most of them celebrating his bestselling and most lasting album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, released
40 years ago. The stage featured a swooping, glittery yellow pathway that appeared just like it.

Dancing, twisting and shouting the lyrics, the crowd of young and old was on its feet during the set of
hits a testament to Johns staying power. And John graciously thanked the loving audience after nearly
every song, rising from his Yamaha grand piano, and pointing at the crowd from multiple directions,
mouthing the words Thank you.

John and his band which included longtime members Nigel Olson on drums and Davey Johnstone on guitars,
mandolins and vocals opened with a lengthy and theatrical performance of
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, the first track on GBYBR. Afterward they transitioned to a
crowd-pleasing Bennie and the Jets and classics Candle in the Wind and Grey Seal. Even now, his
voice remains rich and powerful.

After a massive sing along to Tiny Dancer, an LED-lit chandelier slowly descended from above to accompany
the remaining songs with a kaleidoscope of colored light. During Holiday Inn, a song about all the hotels
the band stayed in during their early touring years, the stage shimmered appropriately enough green.

In his next song, John told the story behind Philadelphia Freedom: The song was written and composed by
John and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin at Caribou Ranch near Nederland as gesture of gratitude for
tennis star Billie Jean King, whose tennis team was the Philadelphia Freedoms. John came down to Denver
before one of Kings critical tennis matches to deliver it, afraid she wouldnt like it. She did, and the
song rose to No. 1 in the U.S.

John is one of the most successful recording artists of all-time, and clearly he has no need to tour around
the world, but continues to entertain and please, continues to show energy and exuberance for being on stage.
His 2014 tour has taken him across the world, including a stop in June at Bonnaroo in Tennessee, and will
culminate in a New Years Eve show at the Barclays Center in New York. Saturdays performance was his third
in Denver since 2010, and the fourth in Colorado since 2009.

A show already filled with energy seemed to only grow in grandeur as the night progressed. Even casual fans
of Johns music would have found the show enjoyable. By the end, John and his band had belted out 24 songs
as part of a nearly 2 and-a-half-hour set that included hit songs like Rocket Man, Your Song and
Dont Let the Sun Go Down on Me. He also dipped into his more recent work, playing Oceans Away in
dedication to the casualties of World War I, fought 100 years ago.

John remains a supporter of the Matthew Shepard Foundation (his last Denver appearance at Wells Fargo Theatre
was to benefit the organization.) Among the audience members, John said, was Shepards mother Judy Shepard,
who co-founded the organization after her son, a University of Wyoming student in 1998, was severely beaten
and killed, targeted by attackers because he was gay.

The show ended with an encore of a raucous Crocodile Rock before his bandmates retreated for him to perform
a soulful solo rendition of Circle of Life, the song from the 1994 animated Disney film The Lion King,
one he said he rarely performed, except occasionally for his children.
