Andy's original notes:
If youre a Costello fan, this is one that really is worth getting excited about. Honestly. Heres one Ive been meaning to get round to doing for ages. Its another from Gary and Andys box of old recordings left to gather dust in the loft. This has always been one of our big favourites, a recording we made of Elvis and the Attractions at the Top Rank in Brighton, on the This Years Model tour. It was recorded directly opposite the stage in stereo with two mics, each one pointing at a speaker stack. I cant remember the machine we used, but it was nothing fancy, believe me.

I transferred the recording directly from the master cassette to PC with CoolEdit2000, with no added after-effects. You may notice a slight change in quality for Mystery Dance. The original tape became damaged halfway through this song, so Ive used a copy I made years ago as a back-up and hardly played since. The tape machine wouldnt start at the start of the show, so the first few seconds of track 1 are missing, hence the fade-in.

Its a great gig that gets better and better as it rolls along, with the whole band having a ball, and a raucous crowd out for a great time. Pete Thomas comes from Brighton, so its a bit of a hometown gig and everyone seems determined to give their very best for friends and family. Points of interest are Moods for Moderns and Two Little Hitlers, neither of which was released at the time. Both ended up on the third album, but this show took place less than a fortnight after the release of the second album. Thats how Elvis was in those days. Also, Less Than Zero is the US version with lyrics about Lee Harvey Oswald. Im Not Angry is just plain fantastic. The sound is pretty damned good for a 29-year-old recording, even though it has aged just a little. The mix and general auditorium sound that night was gorgeous. Please dont leave a comment saying this sounds like sh** or something. Its never been heard, its 1978, its even in stereo. What more could you want?
