Bob's special guest on tonight's programme is one of the most influential
Nashville artists of the last 40 years, Emmylou Harris.
One of the most universally loved and widely respected singers in Country music,
Emmylou performs tracks from her new album 'Hard Bargain', which includes eleven
self-penned songs and the title track written by Ron Sexsmith.
A twelve-time Grammy winner and inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame,
Emmylou Harris has recorded more than 25 albums and lent her talents to countless
fellow artists' recordings. A mainstream country hit-maker of the 70s and 80s and
a pioneer of the bluegrass revival, she has now become a key figure in the
Americana music movement.
In her early career her work with alt. country pioneer Gram Parsons made her a
cornerstone of the 1970s country rock movement, and 'The Road', the opening track
of this new album pays tribute to this career-defining partnership. Emmylou performs
this track live for Bob, along with another new track 'Big Black Dog', reflecting
the huge importance of animals in her life. (In 2004 she founded the animal rescue
centre 'Bonaparte's Retreat' in Nashville , named after her dog Bonaparte who
accompanied her on the road for ten years).
