boombox's notes july 2015:
Pretty much a sold out venue greeted the band after their long trip from a festival in Spain. Generally, I think most were there for Emmylou, who can still sing beautifully and hold a stage, but for me, it was all about Rodney, who I'd wanted to see for some time after I became aware of him after 'Sex & Gasoline' came out. Neither artist disappointed at all, giving us a mix of solo and duet material from their recent collaborations. They were backed by a talented band - Steve Fishell was an original Hot Band member and special mention has to go to Jedd Hughes, whose telecaster playing was excellent. The overall perfomance did not suggest they had all hardly slept for 36 hours and that Rodney had a horrible cold. The band's crew also deserve a shout out for the work they did on the night, changing guitars, fixing duff in-ear monitoring etc. What was obvious too was the chemistry between all and the sheer fun they were having on that stage. To cap it all, I managed to snag a setlist and get it signed by Jedd, Emmylou and luckily for me, as I came upon him leaving via a different exit, Rodney.
Recording came out pretty well - minimal noise from handling, talkers/coughers or creaky seats. I hard limited the applause down to -4db as it was very enthusiastic - I couldn't reduce the overall levels for that as often they started the next song over the applause. 'I Aint Living Long Like This' was also considerably louder than the rest of the set, but I've not tweaked it down to bring the rest up. As usual, I have my 24bit files for anyone who wants to have a stab at a remaster. Jedd is up a little higher in the mix than Steve, as I was opposite his twin Fender amps. However, this proximity also means the acoustic guitars sound more natural.
Enjoy!
