This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

ABOUT:

Who is Eric Andersen? He’s a national treasure that has for far too long been
ignored by a large portion of the music listening public. Back in the 60’s
just prior to the birth of classic rock, it was the early new folk pioneers
like Eric Andersen, Bob Dylan, and Phil Ochs who got the attention of the rockers
because of their lyrical content and song writing ability. Now, well into his
fifth decade of singing, writing and performing, Eric is back...
-- Ericandersen.com

Last year when Eric Andersen passed through New York to play a show, a
friend e-mailed writers, critics and potential fans to drum up
enthusiasm. Mr. Andersen faced stiff competition from other musicians
who were also performing in the city that night, so his friend just laid
it on the line. "How many of those artists," he asked, "have written
songs as good as Eric Andersen's?"

Very few songwriters have built a body of work as consistently strong as
Mr. Andersen's. Beginning in 1965 with "Today Is the Highway," he has
recorded a series of albums that, taken together, constitute a kind of
poetic autobiography, a sonic journal of his movement through the last
four decades in the United States and Europe. Early songs like "Violets
of Dawn" and "Thirsty Boots" capture the excitement of Greenwich Village
in the mid-60's, a time when Mr. Andersen stood alongside the likes of
Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton and helped found the
singer-songwriter movement. His best-known album, "Blue River," appeared
in 1972 and features the haunting ballad "Is It Really Love at All?"

Since 1989, Mr. Andersen, who is now 60, has explored the grip the past
holds on the present. Each of his albums since then - "Ghosts Upon the
Road," "Memory of the Future" and "You Can't Relive the Past" -
describes characters who inhabit a landscape of alluring and sometimes
dangerous specters, whether former lovers ("Belgian Bar") or neo-Fascist
yearnings that pulse restlessly under the surface of modern-day Europe
("Rain Falls Down in Amsterdam").

Eric Andersen is one of those vanguard pioneers who came out of the Northern
snowfields in the 60's and set about blurring the lines as to what songwriting
was supposed to be about. As original and creative as his comtemporaries, some
of whom inspired him, some of whom he challenged, much as fellow Canadian
Neil Young would a few years later, Andersen seemed to trawl the darker waters
of the soul, without falling under the sweep of the tide. Nothing's changed.
It's only improved with age.
His career hit a watershed moment with "Blue River", and as the "Lost Tapes"
confirmed, he was very much the musical counterpoint to Thomas Pynchon's
"Gravity's Rainbow." The BIG buisness of recording eventually ignored him, so
he took himself back to the woodshed of his origins and began a long, fruitful
and philosophically intense sojourn in Norway. All of the CDs from this epoch
in his life are worth seeking out, in particular his collaborations with
Jonas Fjeld, and later with Rick Danko.
-- Christopher White

Eric Andersen was in the same clique as Robert Zimmerman in the early '60s.
Performing around the Greenwich Village coffeehouses and folk "cities", the
duo had the same musical influences. They were thought to be some of the leading
candidates to take folk music further than ever. And while we all know what
happened with Dylan, Eric Andersen certainly didn't fall through the musical cracks.
Andersen actually performed with Dylan during the opening evening of the Rolling
Thunder Revue in 1975 and became the first singer/songwriter to tour Japan.
Still performing nearly forty years after his first gig, Andersen has carved a
very fine and critically acclaimed body of work. His 2000 album You Can't Relive
the Past put him somewhat back in the spotlight as the alt.country genre solidified
itself. Now with his latest record, a double-disc affair, Andersen has once again
brought something old and something new to the fore. And he never skips, or misses,
a beat throughout.

Common knowledge so far, i hope.

Preliminary words:

Last October i uploaded an Eric Andersen show from
Auditorium Roen, Bolzano, Italy, October 24, 1995.

And last week i uploaded another Eric Andersen show from
The Jabberwocky Folk Club, Syracuse, NY, September 15, 1972.

In both descriptions you can read how we became booking agents, organizer, promoters,
road managers and 'chief cook & bottle washer' of Eric's first ever german tour in 1997.

Around the middle of the tour we had our first Bavarian concert at 'Art Cafe Maritim'
in the city of Roding, which is located near the district capital of Cham, county Upper
Palatinate, amidst the Bavarian Forest, near the border to the Czech Republic...

And during soundcheck this guy came in, Eric stopped all the sudden, and they hugged
like crazy. Afterwards he introduced his friend to us as his biggest Italian fan,
policeofficer Jaecksie S. from the Modena region. Jaecksie heard about this tour, took
immediately a vacation and his car...couple hours and some 750 kilometer later he
arrived in time for the nearest and southernmost concert, from his point of view.

After the show he wanted to leave, back to Italy. But as both other upcoming
bavarian gigs took place in the Nuremburg region near our home, we invited
him to stay at our place for a few days, enjoy hanging out with us & Eric and
visiting two more concerts...

A few weeks later we got this parcel as a thank-you, including,
in his opinion, some of the rarest italian Eric Andersen-shows.

THIS ONE HERE IS ONE OF THE CASSETTES...

A good old compact-cassette, High Bias (CrO2) Type II,
labelled "Picchio Rosso Hall, Form., MO, IT - SBD-MTX
30.06.1980", the date here in european standard (d,m,y).

About this concert:

Ever heard about the "Roskilde Festival" ?
Roskilde Festivals started in 1971...in Denmark.

Ever heard about Eric Andersen at Roskilde ?

Roskilde Festival #10: 1980, 27 - 29 June
The Jutes take over Roskilde, which this year bears the slogan "Over alle Grænser"
("Beyond every Border"). The young singer Anne Linnet makes her entrance, Gnags visit
Roskilde and the newspapers are busy writing about the new band from Aarhus called
Sofamania. The focus is especially on singer Kate Svanholm, whereas another of the
Audience - Photographer unknown band’s member is almost left unnoticed. His name is
Jacob Haugaard (now a famous Danish entertainer).

The festival is more peaceful than ever before and one of the hot topics among the
progressive festival-goers is of course also represented at Roskilde Festival: the
anti-nuclear power organisation OOA raise their own wind mill on the festival site.
The political parties also sense the potential of the festival and the local youth
branch of the Liberal party in Roskilde is represented. The chairman is called Jesper
Nordahl – by the end of the 80s he defines Roskilde Festival’s artistic profile when
it comes to sculptures.

Only Torben Bille, from the newspaper Politiken, sounds a sour note when he claims
that the music program has been put together ten years ago. The punters, however, pay
no mind - 45.000 people buy a ticket making sure that the newspaper once again can
report about new records in Roskilde.
http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/2008/forside/historie/1980/?startID=1980

Eric, just moved to Kløfta, northeast of Oslo, Norway,
played twice this Festival, on different stages:

ERIC ANDERSEN (US)

Roskilde Festival, Roskilde Denmark 1980

Sunday 29.06.80 - 13:00 - Canopyscenen
Sunday 29.06.80 - 19:00 - Folkscenen

Eric told us that he was deeply impressed by the crowd of more than 45.000 people, their
appreciation and devotion for singers and songwriters, and especially for himself...
This all led to some kind of party, and, MORE IMPORTANT, to a big hangover the next day.

The "NEXT DAY" he had to play this show here...

According to Eric he played "Ferrari", but it was definitely the Comune di
Formigine, about 6 kilometer southwest of the city of Modena, in the province
of Modena, region Emilia Romagna, AND halfway to Maranello...
(isn't there a sports car factory with this 'cavallino rampante'-logo ?).

Route description:
Exit to MODENA NORD.
After the exit, take direction TUTTE LE DIREZIONI,
than SASSUOLO and go straight until you find direction FORMIGINE.
Take exit FORMIGINE and follow this direction.
Go straight through FORMIGINE on the main road VIA GIARDINI,
after about 1 km you will see on the left an orange building,
the ex music hall called "PICCHIO ROSSO".

The rest of this gig is very nebulous,
and we'll never ask Eric again about it.
PROMISED...
A hangover, mixed with a few shots of Grappa,
can work out psychedelically, or, in this case,
blot out the memory...completely...

It's very special concert for a variety of reasons:

- problems with the PA-system and the monitors during the first song(s)
- the artist goes hog wild, listen to the famous rant on track #2 !
- the whole crowd went absolutely crazy, listen to the enthusiasm on track #4!
- the artist was incapable to plug his guitar in, track #9
- nobody so far remembers the guy on bass and harmony vocals...
- a show without ANY harmonica...almost incredible for an Eric-show...

Eric himself got a 1st generation tape from the soundboard-master,
so the copy he made for his friend Jaecksie is a 2nd generation,
and i transferred it very carefully to DAT: my Nakamichi with
playback head azimuth aligned to Tascam, otherwise completely unaltered...

So there is some slight tape noise, but who cares ?

THIS ONE HERE IS A MUST HAVE !

It's funny,
wacked out,
absolutely strange
and very impressing at the same time,
with an incredible setlist,
and a couple new songs, just written in 1980...

It's absolutely unaltered...
and UNTRADED...to my knowledge, so far

ENJOY IT !
