In the wake of the passing of our partner Jared (the J in JEMS), the JEMS Archive has moved south, giving me the opportunity/burden of going through thousands of tapes as well as several hard drives onto which Jared put many tape transfers he made in the last five or so years. Heres one of them, a mighty fine recording of the second night of Claptons 1983 tour, his first in two years.

In 1983, Jared was still living in Detroit, so this recording was made by SG, the S in JEMS, on a D5 deck borrowed for the occasion. It is recorded using a single Sony mic in what S called magnificent mono today on the phone when I called to ask him about the show.

JEMS recording of the first night has been posted to DIME twice, but this complete recording of the second night is new. The show has been bootlegged a a couple of times, but both Pretty Girl and Second Seattle Hop are incomplete, lacking the final tracks of the show. Based on an online review of Pretty Girl, it is likely this same underlying recording. Cant vouch for Second Seattle Hop, but this is the first proper digital transfer of the show in complete form.

Our friend and Clapton devotee ademotte describes this tour as showcasing ECs new 1980s style, his shows were generally more polished and tight than his 1970s, alcohol-fueled shows, which is both a plus and a minus. These shows tended to be a little more mellow than his prior work (as reflected in the mellower style of his current album), but his guitar work was still the centerpiece.

S, almost certainly recording from Row JJ on the back of the floor, nails the recording and the microphone never moves, giving a steady, clear and full capture of a fine performance. Samples provided.

Thanks to S for recording the show in the first place (and to Bill and Scott who loaned him the deck, an acknowledgement of which youll hear at the end of the show). I dont think S ever made anything less than an excellent recording at the Paramount, his home court. And to the late, great Jared for his tireless work in preserving the JEMS archive, both his own masters and those the rest of us taped. Finally to mjk5510 for his vital post-production support which keeps the new releases flowing. Enjoy.
