This is a really nice sounding Fairport radio broadcast from the time they were touring a bit more than they do these days. In this case, it was from about the time of their album called XXXV. This particular set features a really nice mix of some older FC songs that go back to the band's late 60's origins, along with a few particularly fine tracks that related to recordings they'd made from about 1990 up to the time of the show.
This came from a DIME'r called gadogado, so thanks are definitely due to them. I've copied and pasted some of their info below. I did know the names of about 1/2 dozen tracks they'd left as unidentified. They's also failed to credit band member Chris Leslie, which was definitely in need of correction, since he is a fine musician and one of the lead vocalists here. He's also a prominent songwriter in this more modern FC.
This was a nice sounding share to begin with, but I did wind up doing a bit in Audacity that I'll now outline. There were a few minor dropouts in some spots of the original files, so they were repaired. Audacity just updated their software, and I've been generally pleased with the fact that "realtime effects" now work much better. With a few of the track files being open, I decided to experiment a little with those "effects" and liked what they did to the music. I do feel that this show now sounds even better than it had, and I do admit that is totally subjective, and others may be appalled that I toyed with it.
I play bass, and Fairport's Dave Pegg has been one of my very favorite bassists since I first saw him with the Full House band at Fillmore East when I was 14. He's got terrific chops, but he's incredibly inventive and tasteful too. I didn't feel that his bass was as prominent as I wanted it to be-or as it typically is on Fairport albums, or when seeing them live. I boosted the bass by 1, and then went ahead to see what I might be able to do via Audacity's Muse FX plugin. I liked the Strings Lustre preset at about 5 out of 11. That did nice things to the bass, guitars, bouzouki, mandolin, and fiddles. I also liked the "Warm Presence" preset at 4 out of 11. Doing either of those things didn't fundamentally change the sound very much, but I think it did open the recording out a bit dynamically. I also normalized the tracks in Audacity to make sure channel levels were good. The samples below will allow you to hear a comparison from these tracks before and after the Audacity work was done, along with non-comparative samples of a couple of other tracks.
