"What? Am I dreaming? An uncirculated Foghat recording?"
I'm pretty sure that's what at least some of you are thinking. And yes, it's true. From the deep vaults of the JEMS archive comes another gem courtesy from Stan, the "S" in JEMS.
For those who have been following our Tandberg masters series, you are all aware of the capabilities and challenges of the battery operated reel-to-reel recorder.
It's well known that The Kingdome was one of the worst sounding venues in all America and that is unmissable if you compare this recording with others from this series.
But hey, make no mistake about it, whilst this may not be up to the usual Tandberg standards, given the venue it is better than most of you expect. Samples provided. The sound is consistent and kind of "in your face" despite the giant, boomy building, without much crowd noise besides between songs and the times where the band tries to play with the crowd.
Quality on a recording like this is highly subjective. That being said, the band was on FIRE during this under-documented period, and this recording features rarely played tunes such as "Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie" and "Drivin' Wheel."
Don't think twice, it's all right (pun intended), as there are so few Foghat recordings around, its a welcome opportunity to add another.
And if uncirculated Foghat wasn't enough, stay tuned, as there's another recording coming, as we believe Stan also recorded the headliner this night, Peter Frampton. There's a pro-shot recording of Frampton's set in circulation, also sourced from the JEMS archive, which you can find here: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=608232. Nonetheless, we are also excited to give Frampton another go, this time in form of Stan's Tandberg audience recording which we will post in the coming weeks.
Huge thanks to Stan for his immense contributions to the JEMS Archive. There are many more good things to come from him.
Last but not least, I thank the JEMS team for the opportunity they have given to me, allowing me to present to all of you many of their recordings.
