Freddie Hubbard - The CTI Years 1970-1973 (A Jazamo Compilation)
A fan of the early 70's C.T.I. Record label, it was a time when I became passionate about all styles of Jazz. One of my favorite artists on the label Freddie Hubbard never released a "Live" album with His Band during his 4 year tenure with the label. My objective with this special compilation was to create a Freddie Hubbard "Live" collection recorded only during his years at C.T.I. Records (1970-1973). Each song must have been featured on an album during that time period, and had to be recorded with Freddie's Own Band. All but 1 song is FM Sourced and upgraded when availible. The compilation is over 3 hours long, and it would not be possible without the help of the seeders listed below. I put in alot of hours into this project (see fixes), and I am happy with the results. The source for this collection is FM except for the (b) session, which is mono. All praise too the original recordists, seeders, & traders for whom this compilation would not be possible. These include jazzcdburner, Taperpat, HamHen, Neil Cronin, Goody, Carville, Allsoundz, Upkerry, Bearpalm, Dsgtrane, Dan Augen, & Valleybird.
Freddie Hubbard - The C.T.I. Years 1970-1973 (A Jazamo Compilation):
Totally reworked, patched, increased or decreased volume throughout on individual solo's and where needed with Audacity. Since most tracks had Freddie's trumpet on the left side, channels were reversed when it was otherwise just for audio consistancy. Additionally I left some banter in from freddie here and there, and applause ends in fade outs. Added light EQ to a few tracks to smooth the overall consistancy of sound on this compilation, but at all times the source dictated the end result.
I took NO CARE in trying to cut this compilation down to any format size due to the song lengths. I had a 2-set mindset when selecting the song order for each. This compilation clocks in at over 3 hours, so I put mine on my portable media player. If your desire is to mix up the setlist, cut it down to 2 cd's, or burn all 190 minutes... do your thang.
Specific Fixes:
1) "Ugetsu" - Also know as "Fantasy in D" or "Polar AC", this version differs from the "Polar AC" album which was an outakes release and was originally recorded during his "First Light" sessions. Reversed channels so trumpet was on left side, deleted song banter into. Song has a 1 second pitch bend at 8:44 which I could not fix. Increased volume +2.4 left channel. Recorded in the spring of 1970, the exact date for tracks 1, 2, & 13 are unknown.
2) "Red Clay" - Reversed channels so trumpet was on left, boosted volume on Bass solo. Increase volume +2.4 left channel. Song has a 2 second pitch bend at 8:04 which I could not fix but I did not want to cut any of the song out. Right channel had a decrease in volume midway through song,I fixed it. Freddie originally titled this song "Missisippi Mud".
3) "First Light" - deleted DJ intro. Decreased volume -2db. Added light EQ. This version was from an upgraded source.
4) "Povo" - Increased left channel by + 2.5 db. Faded out before conversational banter. Probably the least played live track on this compilation.
5) "Betcha By Golly Wow" - Taken from the Jazz Workshop 1973-10-9 show, it was the only song (out of 3) that did not have major problems. The song was a hit for The Stylistics in 1972, and originally from the "Polar AC" album which was an outakes release. Increased Volume.
6) "Skydive" - Increased left channel vol by + 2.5 db. Increased bass solo right channel by +3 db.
7) "Straight life" - Although listed as FM source, the track was recorded in mono. Could be a TV Broadcast or excellent audience. I Increased volume overall plus light EQ.
8) "Spirits of Trane" - Decreased volume on intro but Increased volume overall, plus light EQ.
9) "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" - Various volume increases and decreases, faded out before banter. The song was a hit for Paul McCartney at the time
10) "The Intrepid Fox" - Damn, the original Source was missing approx 1 minute intro of song and was faded in. Excellent drum solo by Lenny White and too good not to use on this compilation. So I copied the end out section and patched-in 2 segments at 0.00 & 0:14 with Original source starting at 0:49. Applied Light EQ. This version was from an upgraded source.
11) "Here's That Rainy Day" - Of the 4 versions I had, one was in Mono, one had an early fade, one had dropouts, and finally this one from a 1979 show was perfect. I ignored the recording date criteria for a better sound. Increased or Decreased volume throughout.
12) "Mr Clean" - Again the original Source was incomplete, this time missing the end of song and faded out on the bass solo. I deleted the entire bass solo (-3:50 overall), ending the song on a smooth transition point and added applause sampled from the same show. Light EQ added. This version was from an upgraded source.
13) "Calypso Fred" - A short "End Set" song Originally tacked on to the end of "Red Clay". This song is not on any of his CTI albums, but was released as a full length track on his "Sweet Release" album in 1983. Increased volume and added fades.
