This was the 2nd of 3 Frogwings nights at Wetlands as part of "Wetlands 10th Anniversary Month"
Taper notes:
Getting back to my Jamband roots, for BARN116 I bring you what is really a jamband supergroup -- Frogwings, a short-lived project that brought together "A Team" players from all of the heavyweight jambands at the time -- 3 members of The Allman Brothers Band (in fact, 3/4 of the ABB rhythm section -- Butch Trucks, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge), Jimmy Herring (from the Aquarium Rescue Unit, then an Allman for a brief time, a Jazz Is Dead member, a "Friend" of Phil Lesh, and finally the permanent replacement guitarist in Widespread Panic), Derek Trucks (many years before he was an Allman Brother), John Popper (he of Blues Traveler) on harmonica and vocals, and Kofi Burbridge -- Oteil's brother on keys and flute.
What made me think to transfer this particular show (especially since Yossi Pollack has previously posted Dave Nolan's soundboard recordings of this run)? Well, this year on 9/11/2011, Brooklyn Bowl hosted their "Wetlands Class of '96" reunion show with Ulu and Fat Mama, and I put together a playlist of Wetlands music to play over the PA. Well, I HAD to add a version of the song "Down At The Wetlands" to the playlist! So instead of just grabbing Yossi's soundboard, I transferred this show for the occasion and just snipped out the one track for the playlist. Now finally I've gone back and mastered the entire show.
Sometimes supergroups work and are greater than the sum of their parts, and other times they don't, falling far short of the talents of the individual players. This band was, luckily, in the former group -- at least living up to the quality the individual members' bands, and possibly surpassing them at times.
I would, in fact, consider this to be one of my "top 5" nights at the Wetlands -- and I was there many hundreds of times. Just listen to the first song -- Derek's slide guitar and John Popper's harmonica meld wonderfully with the sublime rhythms of the ABB boys. How many other bands would be bold enough to have full on drum/percussion solo in the middle of the FIRST tune of the night? The songwriting is often very strong, though some of the lyrics are somewhat forgettable.
And as a bonus, Derek Trucks did double duty each night, opened the show with his band and providing my (and probably many others') first opportunity to see Derek Trucks band too.
This was the 2nd night of a 3 night run of this band at Wetlands (I only caught/taped 2 of the 3 nights) as part of the Wetlands 10th Anniversary month. Yes, I missed one night, but this was a VERY VERY busy month for me -- consider the shows I'd been to right around this time:
Al and the Transamericans @ Wetlands 1/7; Oteil & The Peacemakers + Fat Mama @ Knitting Factory 1/11; MMW residency @ Bowery 1/13-17; Sonia Dada @ Wetlands 1/21; Groove Collective @ Wetlands 1/29; Dan Bern + Jill Sobule @ Bottom Line 2/4; Melvin Sparks + Deep Banana Blackout @ Wetlands 2/5; moe @ Wetlands 2/7; Derek Trucks + Frogwings 2/9-10; Bob Weir & Ratdog trio - 2/11; Bob Weir & Ratdog trio - 2/13; Wetlands Power Jam 2/14; Percy Hill @ Wetlands 2/20; Tibet House Benefit @ Carnegie Hall 2/22; Free Beer & Chicken @ Wetlands Lounge 2/26
....that was a busy month for sure....
In sum, this was an amazing night with a collective of great musicians truly proving their chops. The Warren Haynes sit-in for the encore (the Allman Brothers chestnut, Hot 'Lanta) was really just gravy. With Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring onstage, they hardly needed Warren (though, I will never say no to a Warren Haynes sit-in, to raise the roof that much higher!)
For anyone who's interested, my recording of my #1 all time favorite Wetlands night of all time is already posted (by someone else) here: http://www.archive.org/details/hpd1998-01-27.flac16 -- "The High Plains Drifter" all star band with John Popper & Bobby Sheehan from Blues Traveler, Eric Schenkman from Spin Doctors, Jono Manson (friend & mentor of the rest of the guys, having played in Joey and the Worms with them in their early days) plus a slew of gusts including Noel Redding from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chris Barron, Warren Haynes, a full-on Blues Traveler mini-set.
Enjoy!
Scott
