The evening started with a brass band playing for the crown in front of the venue. At the appointed time they led a second line into the theater and marched up onto the stage playing When the Saints Come Marching In. After a couple of songs they were joined on stage by T-bird and the Breaks and the marching band departed.

While an Austin band, I had never seen T-Bird and the Breaks before, but they're a solid band with nice horn section and good back up singers. The played a wide variety of styles of music that kept things fresh. They were a good choice to warm up for the Meters. http://tbirdandthebreaks.com/

It had been many years since I saw The Funky Meters, but they did not disappoint. Art is still recovering from his stroke and sat through most of the show (a first time I had seen that), but he was still on top of his game. It was also the first I had seen Brian Stoltz since his days with the Neville Brothers. I always thought his guitar added a lot to their sound. Russell Batiste was solid all night on drums even after his stool collasped in the middle of the first song. It took three of the crew to lift him vertical and then find him another seat. But, he never missed a beat throughout the whole ordeal. Lastly, George Porter!!! Need I say more.
