Lineage: Stealth recorded and minimally produced by mrsaureus, sitting center floor thirty-five feet back from the stage. Core-Sound High End Binaurals (DPA-4060 capsules) to Sony PCM-M10 (48 kHZ, 24 bit), WavePad Sound Editor to provide modest global amplification, cut into songs and export as16 bit/ 44.1 kHz FLACs. If people want it, I can share the 24/48 version. This is an audience recording that aims to document the experience of being in the crowd at the show, and features occasionally loud but appropriate crowd noise. This is the first time this recording is being shared.

Presidents of the United States of America last week was the start of a funny music triple play here in NYC, with G&O in the middle and Sparks a couple of days later. If PUSA represents a solid musical act marinated in comedy, Garfunkle and Oates is pretty much the mirror image of that: essentially a comedy act punctuated with songs. While they are perfectly competent musicians, neither has a voice strong or distinctive enought to admit the robust possibility of a straight musical career, and theyd play as well in a comedy club as a music venue. But if O&G without the comedy is inconceivable, you couldnt have O&G without the music either: the songs are where it all comes into focus, where the sly rap to the audience builds to pitch perfect climax every few minutes more or less on schedule, making their show is a crisp lesson in female sexuality in all different ways.

And the songs are beautifully constructed and executed. Few acts deploy such deeply clever wordplay or such a casual mix of the kewpie doll cute and the nasty. Working as a comedy duo isnt easy, and the fact that there is no real straight man/funny man polarization makes it even more challenging. They must do their shtick in dialog, and make it sound fresh every time, and they really hit the mark on this.

I think this was my first time at the Gramercy Theater. Old movie house not far from Gramercy Park, small space, pretty cool. G&O started at 7:30 PM sharp with no opener and played for one hour with no encore. I havent been out of a show that early, well, ever, but I dont mind concise if I get my moneys worth. With G&O I definitely did.

Download this. Its really funny.
