i've been a huge jayhawks fan since the release of "Hollywood Town Hall" but had unfortunately never had the chance to see them live due to a number of different circumstances. when this show was announced (actually two nights), i jumped on a ticket. sadly, neither show sold out and tickets were readily available outside the venue on the night i attended. sadder still, the GAMH decided to do table seating for the show and though it was nowhere near sold out, all good seats were gone by the time i was able to get there after putting my kids to bed. a kind couple let me pull up a chair to their table on the right side of the hall and i kept my mic there for most of the set. after a bunch of people inexplicably left after "Waiting for the Sun" (it wasn't even the end of the set!), i quickly moved to a location just right of center and closer to the stage. you'll notice the sound improves with "Blue."
what a great night of music from these two. the sum is greater than the parts certainly applies when talking about louris and olson. together, these two are nothing short of magic. even on the songs they didn't write/record together, there was a palpable infusion of energy when their two voices and guitars mesh.
for jayhawks fans who never had the chance to hear many of these songs raw and unvarnished, this will be a treat. for those of us who never had a chance to see these two artists together on stage before the acrimony set in, this was a revelation of what once was and perhaps, what might be again.
