Total Time ::: 51:44
::: Extremely fine quality stereo up-close AUD in small club! Check the samples to hear a bit o' the glory.
::: WARTS: Taper shut deck off between songs & ends are rather abrupt. Many dropouts & dullspots fixed but surely missed a few. #7 cuts right at end (tapeflip). Some AUD talking but it ain't bad. R channel has VERY faint background noise from Beta at times, mostly last song (no fears - a great recording).
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This Mk3 version is remastered WITH EQ (adding bass & lowering high end a bit). The Mk2 version without EQ can be found elsewhere.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: The 2012-08-xx upload shall now be known as Mk1 & is obsolete. This Mk3 version is pitched more true & has better fades & some other fixes & is EQ'd.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: DIFFERENT show than Gay&Terry Woods 1976-09-22 Dublin show I also uploaded.
::: Most songs have rather long meandering intros, often with stories, so traxsplits are set up so you can opt for only music if you wish.
::: Steeleye Span & Woods Band founders & Terry is ex-Sweeney's Men & pre-Pogues here. First class folkrock rivaling anything out there.
::: The same year their Polydor albums "The Time Is Right" & "Renowned" were released.
::: Worth the d/l for "Dunlavin Green" alone, but 'tis a smashing psych-tinged folkrock recording of the highest order. To date, 40 years later, we still only have a few live documents of this band.
Recording Information ::: "large" Marantz cassette recorder with built-in stereo microphones -> master, (narrow) stereo, normal bias cassette (slightly oversaturated levels), Dolby off -> 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 tape.
Playback circa 1994 ::: master cassette (normal bias), Dolby off -> Sony SL-HF750 Super Beta hi-fi recorder -> 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 HiFi audio tape.
Playback 2011-10-18 ::: 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 HiFi audio tape -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel alignment, fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (TLH).
Remastering 2016-02-xx ::: flacs (TLH) -> wavs -> Remastering 2016-02-xx ::: flacs -> wavs (TLH) -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, -1.45% averaged pitch (speed) fix with single pass after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO equalisation] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2016-02-27.
Line-up ::: Terry Woods - acoustic guitar, concertina, vocals // Gay Woods - mandolin, autoharp, vocals // David Morrison(? or Ed Deane) (some songs) - guitar.
DimeTravel 280 ::: Thanks to the original taper, Mr Smith, an enthusiastic music lover of the first order! Also, thanks to Zongo for taper introductions & tape assistance. ::: Corrections welcome ::: This is the stuff my dreams are made of. Stunning psych-tinged folkrock. If you don't know their released material, seek it out. The collection CD that came out on HUX Records is a fine place to start. I can't say enough good things about these guys. Captivating, haunting, melodic. Enjoy!
Please note that a better transfer will be attempted at some point in the future from a digital copy that was made, which will hopefully improve things, including decreasing some background noise due to the Beta transfer & alignment. But at the rate things are going, I decided to get this out so people can enjoy it, as the years are flying by!
