GUNTER INFO:
Alright, I would be glad if not only germans will download this gig but also
everyone else - therefore a little english info about this BIG bloke: "Big Boss,
Gunter Gabriel". Compared to, and often entitled "the german Johnny Cash", Gunter
is an original, the first and still the most succesful, german country artist.
He even did recorded shortly before Johnny's passing together with him in Cash'
own recording studio. He often adapted country classics and sung them in german,
but also wrote songs of his own who topped the charts. Wrote songs for other
artists too and even to this day, he himself is covered by other bands. Lived
a rollercoaster life, to say the least - he's still around and kicking ass.
In the true word of the meaning... Two meters high, weights a ton, big bear belly
and he WILL turn 66 years old tomorrow (11th june 2008), he sure IS a diesel!
Okay, just 2 days before this gig the guys came back from Irac where they played
the first ever Freedom Festival since the US, well, the... Mission Accomplished?
Gunter is a VERY unique guy, down to earth and enjoys on- and offstage chats
with his fans. Always ready to show you his middlefinger if something pisses him
off (which is alot) and sure a great entertainer. No doubt about his performing
skills which are plain perfect but also can end up disastrous if he has loaded
too much, or just sweet as honey as at this gig. All depending on whatever moods
he's in, or switches to. You'll never know what you'll get if you attend one of
his gigs, even not IF he shows up at all... or not. Anyway, Gunter is just CULT!
GIG INFO:
This was like the 40th time I was on a Gunter Gabriel gig the last two decades
and I'm glad to say, this turned out to be my best recording of him, by far!
[And sadly the only one remaining as all my old cassettes are gone... R.I.P.]
To me, I just see him in the tradition of protest singers/songwriters. I honestly
don't give a wet fart whatever he's called in the yellow press, Gunter is a punk.
TECH: I had mounted the mic at the top of a 2 meter antenna and that thing is
welded on my WW II steel helmet (german one, of course!). Standing like 10
meters in front of the stage, building a perfect, isosceles triangle with
the stage speakers. I "may" have been looking strange that way, but who
cares about that in a Gunter audience anyway? Right. Soundquality is real
good therefore without too much crowd noise, just enough to capture the
atmosphere! Sure I was spotted by chief Gunter himself and in the half hour
long break between both sets, he asked me "are you recording this?" and I
answered "Sure. You want a copy?" But, wise as this bloke is, his godlike
answer was just "So'ne Scheisse hör' ich mir doch nicht an!" [I did over
10.000 concerts. I won't hear such-a shit anyway. Ha ha ha...] Yo yo yo!
For everyyone of you Cowboys & Cowgirl riders, Truckers, Gunter lovers and/or
otherwise lonely hearts out there, here is it for your listening pleasure.
DEUTSCH:
Lasst uns tauschen, schick mir
Prost!
