comments:
This one comes from my audience master and is a complete show of about
100 minutes that includes a good variety of Benson style.(can't remember
if I had to splice a tape flip cut or not, since this was one of my first
remasters after resolving a glitching problem.) He sings a little more
than I'd like, but this is thankfully before George (as Ian Anderson might
put it) "put the electric guitar back in its case." He plays jazz, pop,
some R & B/ ("soul" was the word used for it back then) and shows himself
to be quite a versatile stylist.
I don't know most of his song titles, but he does White Rabbit
(yes, it is the same song the Jefferson Airplane does, it just doesn't
sound at all the same and nobody sings in it) and another nice song from
that fine record, El Mar, which is a Benson favorite of mine. The singing
is pretty good too here, but I like first and foremost about George Benson
music, the guitar. He is a brilliant guitar player, and there is plenty
of that to hear in this concert which I believe was in Shapiro Gym,
that's where most of the Brandeis Univ. shows were, but I can't be
sure they were all there). This was the only show I ever saw at
Brandeis Univ. The room acoustics aren't very good, but the recording
came out clearly and I was probably about 25-30 feet from the stage,
just about dead center. It was a general admission). There is a moderate
amount of crowd noise in the recording as the crowd was into the show,
but it's not overbearing. The crowd was respectfully appreciative. This
sounds better than I thought, definitely better than when I was there.
They play Greatest Love of All, Masquerade, The World is a Ghetto, Lady Blue,
and many others which are probably just as familiar to those many fans of
George Bension's music. Seems like the crowd knew all the tunes, cheering
at the start and end of every one. I don't know who else is in this band,
but it has keyboards, bass, drums, I believe 6 players in all. I think
the mikes were about 10 feet apart so there is some stereo feel in here.
Any setlist help would be welcome, and if someone wants to add artwork to
this they're welcome to. This is a first time master seed especially for
Benson Nation, from yours truly, glasnostrd19
