Comment:
This one was kind of hard... Two days after a quite messed up show in Amsterdam, the P-Funk All-Stars played a sold-out Effenaar in Eindhoven. Maybe due to the massive sound issues they encountered in Amsterdam, this show was one of the "quietest" we ever heard - and maybe this led to the audience recording presented here suffering from the various problems we had to deal with. While the actual show itself sounded very good, the original recording lacked clarity and dynamics so badly that the taper didn't want to release it to the collectors' public at all. Glad he finally did, since this is an awesome show with the mob being on fire and George on stage for almost 95% of the night - we think it was well worth the work we put into it.
Speaking of which, the recording went through a lot of remastering and tweaking. We corrected several flaws and annoying audience noises and added some clarity and punchiness to the overall sound. Probably due to a tape split the first verse of Red Hot Momma was missing, so we decided to cut the few remaining seconds and tried to edit it as smoothly as possible. The overall result is, frankly speaking, a massive improvement over the original source, and we may carefully consider this a VG audience recording now. Well, it still is FAR from perfect, and especially during the intro medley there is some nasty distortion on George's mic which couldn't be removed at all. This is even more annoying since the medley is indeed a rather rare and funky performance... Furthermore we know very well that there is a bit too much treble in the mix for some ears now, but this was part of the trade-off we had to accept in order to improve the overall quality of the recording. However, the quality gets better some time into the show, and parts of it are now very listenable, we suppose. Content-wise, the highlights of the show, besides the aforementioned medley, include Michael Hampton's stunning performance of Maggot Brain (opened by GC doing the Mathmatic Of Love talk followed by a fantastic keyboard solo by Danny Bedrosian), an intense cover of Dr. Feelgood performed by the incredible Miss Mary Griffin, and a nice take on Mothership Connection with the amazing Belita Woods doing lead vocals on Swing Down Sweet Chariot. Also listen to lead guitarist Ricky Rouse laying down some blistering solos, he sure was on fire that night...
So here we are, with an uncirculated P-Funk show for y'all to ENJOY!
