Gil Evans 19761104 Paris (upgrade)
I already upped this tremendous GE show on dime, with guitarist
Van Manakas (on a thrilling version of Summertime), George Adams,
Lew Soloff and Pete Levin at their best.
This is an upgrade, as I received a few days ago from a friend his own
recording of the 1st broadcast of the show (tracks 1 to 3), of higher
audio quality, as my own recording of the 1st broadcast was rather A-,
with a missing track.
Unfortunately, the late show on the same place & day, all devoted to
the Hendrix repertory, has never been broadcasted.
source : France-Musique (FM), 2 broadcasts in 1976 & 1977
lineage :
tracks 1,2,3 : FM broadcast > tape deck > wav > flac, sound quality : A+
tracks 4,5 : FM broadcast > audio cassette > aif > flac, sound quality A
Venue, date, personal & setlist :
Paris, Maison de Radio-France, 4th november 1976 (early show) :
Lew Soloff, John Faddis (tp), Janice Robinson (tb),
Bob Stewart (tuba), George Adams (ts), Pete Levin (hrn-snt),
John Clark (hrn-elg), Van Manakas (elg), Mike Richmond (b-elb)
Sue Evans (d), Gil Evans (p-elp-arr-cond)
1. Summertime (11:08) [upgrade]
2. The Meaning of the blues-Parabola-Amadama (35:38) [upgrade]
3. Ictus (6:52) incomplete, fade out at the end of the first broadcast [bonus track]
4. Blues in C suite : Concorde-Cheryl-Air conditionning-Relaxin' at Camarillo (35:15)
5. Thoroughbred (11:05) incomplete, fade out at the end of the 2nd broadcast
I removed talking of the speaker, Andr Francis on "Ictus"
(not really noticeable, except may be for the happy few musicians)
Enjoy it !
For all GE addicts, look at this page :
http://gilevansproject.com/
The project's aim is to release a CD of never played scores of Gil Evans.
Ryan Truesdell, who leads the project, is a composer, arranger & producer
for Bob Brookmeyer & Maria Schneider, the spiritual daughter of GE
(remember the beautiful M.Schneider/D.Sanborn torrents on dime).
He works by now with the GE family to achieve this project for the
100th anniversary of Gil's birthday.
Contributions to this project are highly welcome !
