Well this is an artist you don't see every day! I happened to be in Montreal this week for their amazing International Jazz Festival (which features all genres of music) and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this concert being offered up the next day. With only one day before the concert to buy my ticket for a show that had been scheduled for months, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to get a ticket through legitimate sources but was willing to do whatever it takes to get one. As luck would have it, I managed to grab a single ticket in a great taping location and the rest is history!

This was my first outing with my new Naiant X-X omni mics and I couldn't think of a better or more fitting way to break them in.

I was concerned about whether Ginger would actually show up but he did and with a vengeance! He seemed to be in quite a good mood and talkative. After the first song, one of his mic stands sort of got wobbly and started falling. When the tech came out to help, I was waiting for him to get punched in the nose but there was none of those shenanigans. Ginger did mention that these weren't his drums and that they change every night which can't be fun.

The show was terrific. It was set in the beautiful Thtre Maisonneuve with a full house of respectful and quiet patrons. This, of course, helped the recording be as good as it is...especially running omnis. The acoustics are great in that house and sitting in the second row of the "Corbeille" or Dress Circle with quiet people in front of me was terrific. The backing artists were all of absolute top calibre and the percussionist, Abass Dodoo absolutely complimented Ginger without ever once being overbearing.

All in all, this recording is a total treat and I'm very happy I was able to capture it. Even if you're not a huge fan of jazz, the sheer amount of history and legend behind Ginger, the terrific performance by all musicians as well as the extremely rare tours and even fewer recordings make this one for the history books and well worth downloading. Enjoy.
