Tapers Notes:

Gladys Knight makes a rare appearance to the West coast, at the sonically perfect Segerstrom
Concert Hall, backed by her band and the Pacific Symphony, directed by Eimeer Noone.

Gladys Knight & The Pips had a solid hit of Norman Whitfield's "Heard it Through the Grapevine"
but Marvin Gaye made the song his own the following year, all the way to Number One.

The Pips were brothers and a cousin of Gladys Knight. Her older brother "Bubba" does a comedy
sketch and a medley of R&B songs towards the end of the show.

Jim Weatherly wrote most of the groups' hits, including "Midnight Train to Georgia." He was a white
football player from Mississippi. He also wrote "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say
Goodbye)", and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me".
