Notes: Sometimes dreams do come true. The old truck was raised from the swamp, and this is the sound of its engine roaring for the first time in nearly 8 years. GYBE is back, and for those like me who've missed them the first time around, this unlikely reunion at ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas finally provided me the opportunity to experience in first-hand the raw power of the countless GYBE performances i've only had the chance to listen to on tape. Thanks GYBE and ATP for this amazing festival, which probably had its most interesting and eclectic line-up yet. This was also my first ATP, and while (most) of the festival environment excelled my expectations, the sound quality of its venues was a total let down (having brought my DPA's didn't help). The Center Stage is a really bad venue acoustic wise, and the over-the-top bass PA units resulted in excessively bassy performances, albeit loud, which is somewhat great for some acts. GYBE needs both clarity and punch, and the Center Stage PA and the soundtechs were only able to deliver the latter. The sound is not perfect, but after radical bass filtering, this recording sounds much better than what I've heard on that night. If you hear someone strange in the recording, it was probably the acidheads in front of me who were trying to buddy up with me during the show. My mics were poorly attached to my neckband (old tape), causing me to constantly checking if they are correctly attached to my band, so there's some rubbing on the mics from time to time (one of them even fell off in the middle of Storm, which is noticeable for a couple of seconds). I have recorded plenty of this ATP, which I will be sharing in a not-so-close future, when I'm less busy. At some point I'll upload my three Godspeed performances at the LMA, but i'd like them to have a run on DIME first.
