The Palominos played one of their 1st shows in 1986 in Boston and that
one was supposed to have Jack Bruce in it. It didn't, never found out why,
but I suspect a guy who had alot of trouble getting ready for an 8:00 (PM)
gig would have too much trouble getting ready for a noontime free promo gig.
I guess this is what the January concert was to promo (along with then- current
album "Visions of Excess", my favorite GP album but not their only good one).
Both that (Jan. show) and this one feature music from that studio album.
there are a few disc break options for this, as most of these tracks have
a few seconds between songs of nothing much going on. Almost everyone in this
band does some singing, most of the lead vocals come from Syd Straw, and Bruce
sings several of them (including Clustering Train, a stark contrast to the Jan.
version. Stipe sings in that one, not in this version)
The Palominos put on a good show. Prior to 1986 (and some 85) they were more
"avant-garde" pop rock jazz fusion. at this point they sounded a little more
"hit-radio friendly" which isn't necessarily a good thing with me, but this time,
it was. I saw the Jackless Jan. show and still enjoyed it, even though I was sorely
disappointed Jack didn't make it. Didn't see this one. Whether it's the Palominos
or any otheros, A Jack Bruce concert (Jan. concert) without Jack Bruce in it
is missing something important. This one is not. the master levels were recorded
too high in this one, not enough to ruin it with buzzing/distortion, but enough
so it's not as clear as it should be. still an enjoyable listen, and a good
performance of Golden Jack. this may be from the master recording, but I'm pretty
sure it's from a 1st gen. tape copy of master cassette.
