Known Faults: none

There must be a name for the condition where you have many more of a thing than you can possibly need for the rest of your life but you keep on acquiring. When presented with the opportunity to add a small cache of uncirculated audience recordings circa 1971-73, JEMS simply couldn't say no.

Master cassette tapes from this era are not common. The format was still in its early stage and far fewer folks were even attempting to covertly record concerts in 1971 and 1972 compared to just a couple of years later.

The cassettes passed along to JEMS were all done by the same NY/NJ-area taper who recorded last week's Moody Blues master from Madison Square Garden 1972. This week it's a VERY early Graham Nash solo performance with a guest appearance by Dave Mason on three tracks, two of which feature him on lead vocals.

The set includes "Military Madness," "Man In The Mirror" and "Chicago" from Nash's 1971 solo debut Songs For Beginners, plus five from his second album Wild Tales that wouldn't be released until the first week of 1974: "Prison Song," "Grave Concern," "Oh! Camil," "I Miss You" and "Another Sleep Song."

The rest come from his work as a duo with David Crosby plus CSN and CSNY proper. The material performed with Mason includes "Every Woman" from his album It's Like You Never Left, which would be released a month after this show. Nash also features on the studio recording. Mason plays guitar on the studio version of Nash's "Oh! Camil (The Winter Soldier)" and does the same here. "Only You Know And I Know" comes from Mason's 1970 solo debut. Nash moves between guitar and piano across the set.

Like the Moody Blues master presumably done on the same gear, the recording itself bears all the hallmarks of an early, non-professional cassette recorder, with narrow fidelity and limited body. However, because this is an acoustic show, the Nash recording is inherently clearer albeit in something of a boomy room but still pretty darn good for a 1973 audience tape. Samples provided.

Thanks as always to JEMS' key partners including Professor Goody who made sure the pitch was adjusted and mjk5510 who handled post production and setlist creation. We could not do this without them.

More soft-rocking, early '70s masters are coming soon.
