The Grandmothers of Invention - 2013-04-25 - Sankt Ingbert Jazz Festival exc aud
27. International Jazz Festival St. Ingbert Germany
Yeah. This is my first recording so I was a bit nervous. Luckily the Stadthalle has great acoustics and the audience (seated) was very disciplined (you can here Nappy make some jokes about this), so I'm very happy with it. My only mistake: I was afraid of distortion when they started with some loud pieces, so I decreased the input level in the midst of "apostrophe" and again in "debra cadabra". It should be fixed now - can anyone find it?
Anyway, a pretty cool show with some obvious choices and some surprises: Not a single note from "Uncle Meat" - which is the Don Preston signature album to me. But the lengthy "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" feature was a more than worthy substitute. I also liked the idea of focussing on a few albums instead of the 'one song per album'-strategy. Especially as these albums were "we're only in it for the money", "burnt weeny sandwich", "one size fits all", "bongo fury" and "roxy & elsewhere".
some additional facts:
- My 'songs I want to see live' list shrunk a lot this evening.
- It is still very long (excentrifugal forz please! even by Justin Bieber)
- I missed Tom Fowler and Miroslv Tadic (both announced) but of course the replacement guys made a great job.
- A good choice for a cd split would be after Track 17
- The Opening act, "Krassport" played a version of Gustav Holst's "The Planets", arranged for trio (p,g,dr). I recorded only one piece (soundcheck for my new zoom h1) which I will probably post later.
- The SR (Saarlaendischer Rundfunk) radio station recorded it as well and there might be a tiny chance for me to get a copy.
