You got to love Don Preston - he's your Mother; even if he uses cheesy keyboard sounds, plays sloppy solos and messes up the lyrics sometimes. But he once again managed to put up a new Grandmothers formation. In 2013 he hit the big one with Napoleon Murphy Brock, but this lineup featuring Mother Bunk Gardner was amusing as well.

Also present were:

Christopher Garcia: The Grandmothers veteran, like always a great drummer and strange singer.

Eric Klerks: The unknown 'fill-in-guy', replacing Dave Parlato. Did a good job.

Max Kutner (that hair!): The unknown 'surprise-guy' - the first Zappa-Cover-band-Guitar-player I saw who does not
- play Fusion stuff (Michael Miller)
- play Blues stuff (Ray White)
- emulate FZ (Ike Willis, Arthur Barrow, Roland St. Germain)
Instead he is aware of Zappa's style, but does it his own way. A bit more bite would be even better.

The whole band could use some of that as well. If you know Zappa's post Don Preston bands - the funkyness of the 70s MOI and the power play of the Rocking Teenage Combo - Don's Grandmothers sound pretty lush and nostalgic.

Never mind, they are fun, especially if you are there. So if you play this recording LOUD you might get an idea what it was like.

Thhe show was not sold out. I stood 3 m from the stage with no one standing in front of me! A lot of folks where sitting on chairs or on the floor. Given these circumstances, the band did pretty good and seemed to have a lot of fun.
