The Day After

Happy Memorial Day everybody! I’m relaxing today. Later I’m going to visit my grandson and spend some quality time. I got a good night’s sleep last night, let me tell you. I was pooped after the gig.

The Kihncert last night was incredible. The bands were fantastic, the music was inspirational, the Shoreline was packed, the crowd was great, the weather was good, and I had a fabulous time. It’s such a pleasure to look out from the stage and see so many familiar faces looking back at me.

I felt pretty good out there. The GKB was tight and it was a ton of fun being out there on stage again. It never fails to thrill me, no matter how many gigs I’ve done. All our songs sounded great, the mix was excellent, and the monitors were nice and loud, the way I like ‘em. Ry was particularly hot, I thought. (God, I’m proud of that boy!) Our new bass player, Robert Berry, was outstanding, his vocals added a huge touch to the overall sound, and he genuinely enjoyed himself, bouncing around like a teenager. It was his first Kihncert and I hope he’s around for many more. Dave Medd, from the Tubes, filled in for Tim Gorman (Who was out due to heart surgery) on keyboards and did a superb job. His vocals added a lot also. And of course, Dave Danza, our superstar drummer, was as solid as a rock. Dave is in excellent physical condition, you have to be to be a rock and roll drummer, it’s a very aerobic job.

Due to time constraints, we had a short sound check (2 songs), but it didn’t matter in the long run. Our sound mixer, Big Ed, has worked many Kihncerts before and knows the house system at the Shoreline. Ed is known for his volume and is not afraid to crank it up. You need a guy like Ed at the Shoreline. We played a short 35-minute set, as per instructions. We would have liked to play longer, but there were so many bands on the bill that the show would have run into the next morning if we all did what we wanted to do.

Backstage, the mood was buoyant. Band members from all the bands mingled and ate the catered meal. I got a chance to chew the fat with Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon, and James Young, of Styx. We had a pair of Les Paul guitars, which were signed by various members of the bands.

Steve Wright, founding member of the band, co-author of all the hits, and longtime bass player for the GKB, made a rare appearance in our dressing room. Since his stroke, Steve has been seldom seen, but he was there backstage and his presence was inspirational. It was really great to see Steve again.

I used the Boulder Creek 12-string acoustic guitar on the song “Remember” and it really sounded great! Big Ed cranked it up in the PA and it sounded like the end of the world. Those Boulder Creek guys really have something special there. James Young of Styx checked it out and thought it was cool. I dedicated “Remember” to Brianna, who we lost last June. I saw her mom n the audience, and the memories of last year came flooding back. It was a touching moment.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and being a part of this wonderful event. Let's do it again and again!
