Total Time ::: 35:25

::: EXC- wide-stereo "SBD" quality! Check samples to.. split the scene, taste the wine, or bide yr time while waitin' on the whole kit&caboodle.
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few micro ones. Vocals mostly in Lchannel only (extreme separation). Recording is hot with some inherent distortion&occasional vocal mike overload&had a lot of clipping (peaks somewhat restored here).
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is an Mk2 remaster of the original "Mk1"version, still on DIME at www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=699680
::: DIMER ismokeweed was NOT the original Mk1 uploader (tho' MANY thanks!) & said 'twas likely from DIME. (If so, pre-DIMEbot EZT circa 2004).
::: AFAIK, this is the earliest circulating Grin live set, 3 full months before 1971-05-02 Washington,DC Sylvan Theater. Anyone have any '69-70 tapes?
::: This Sunday nite set/tape is incomplete (likely an excerpt as it was part of a compilation). More songs were played in the set (+ maybe a 2nd set).
::: Unknown if Grin also played Fri or Sat this weekend. gv0000 found no listing for this gig tho' he says Grin played Emergency on 1970-04-12.
::: Grin's self-titled debut album (recorded '69-70) unissued 'til 1st week of May 1970 (NOT June as noted online), so 3 months before this set.
::: Grin's 1st single (7"45) WAS out by this gig, issued in USA Sept'70 "We All Sung Together"b/w"See What A Love Can Do".
::: Grin had NO albums out by this date. #08 WAS out as a 45 but unissued on LP 'til May (S/T 1st"Grin"LP). #02+04 later on"1+1"+#06 later on"All Out".
::: AFAIK, this is the only circulating complete Grin"Susie Q"cover. The other 1 ('72 Frederick,MD Gold Dust Inn) cuts&Grin never released a version.
::: Various attempts were made to create a narrow stereo &/or mono mix but results were unsusccessful as it raised the distortion too much.
::: **IMPORTANT NOTE: "Mk1"version of this has 4 trax at end from 4 OTHER 1971 shows (NOT from this same night at Emergency).
::: "Mk1"bonus trax from other shows now a separate upload (End Unkind 1971-05-02 _+3 source unknown: Smokestack Lightning/Celebration/End Unkind).
::: Similar, unique taping method/mike placement on this set means it was probably done by TR (Grin's soundman?) who also taped 1971-05-02, 1971-09-19, +the 2 S/U East Coast 1971 sets. Likely there are more '71 Grin tapes around from this source than these 5 (mostly partial) sets + the other 3 misc. songs we've seen so far.
::: Emergency was open for 2+ years ('69-71). 'Twas purportedly the only DC club at the time where original material could be played by local bands.
::: Along with local bands, Emergency also booked well-known groups like the Kinks, Bob Seger, Renaissance.
::: DIMER zootype (Mk1 upload comment): "The place had a sloping floor covered with carpet instead of lots of seating so you just kind of sprawled on the floor there.. and there was a small dance floor in front of the stage... They sold juices at the bar... I also went there for a press conference regarding the "death of Paul McCartney"... Didn't get to see the Kinks when they played there. Cool little place."
::: Would love to hear live tapes of local DC bands Claude Jones, Crank or Fat City. IMO, Fat City is underrated (if you ignore some of the pop).

Recording Information ::: SBD+on stage microphones mixed to unknown stereo reel-to-reel recorder -> master stereo reel -> ? -> unknown (low) generation analog tape -> unknown method digital transfer (to 44.1KHz/16bit wavs) -> "Mk1"flacs.
(NOTE stage mike/s R channel & Lchannel PA /SBD is mostly vocal mikes maybe mixed with another stage mike near the drums & maybe no line feed but just tape deck mike/s right on the mike stand/s).

Remastering 2021-xx-xx ::: unknown (low) generation flacs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove extreme&varied DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, many micro dropout & dullspot repairs + some major ones, levels were very overloaded in digital transfer & possibly before so ClipFix used for partial restoration/repair, volume adjustments, pitch (speed) seemed OK after frequency analysis & with CD pitch verification (so no adjustments made), NO equalisation (*except notches applied - Lchan 58+59KHz, +various other notches between songs to lower fluctuating hum), NO noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-12-xx.

Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 889 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders & uploaders! MANY thanks to DIMER ismokeweed for the reseed! Thanks to DIMER zootype for input. Sincere thanks to whomever uploads this for me. ::: Corrections welcome ::: Listen to this! No wonder these guys were making waves - it's heavy stuff. The first single had been released & the first album sessions were essentially done but the album wouldn't appear for several more months, but the band was FLYING. Surprised some DC tapers weren't capturing every show, even back in those days. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
