::: EXC stereo "SBD"quality (except #06 EX-). Check samples for "nothing to Grin about", "maybe I'll Grin" or "oodles of Grins".
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Recording was hot (quite oversaturated during transfer) with some inherent distortion&had LOTS of clipping on these 4 trax (peaks somewhat restored here). #06 at 3&1/2mins had unfixable dropout, now patched with another section. #06 rough&slightly late start&lesser quality (than other 3 songs here) & end applause cuts almost immediately while last drum beat fading.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is an Mk2 remaster of the original "Mk1"FILLER trax, still on DIME at www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=699680
::: DIMER ismokeweed was NOT the original Mk1 uploader (tho' MANY thanks!) & said 'twas likely from DIME. (If so, pre-DIMEbot EZT circa 2004).
::: Original Mk1 source had these 4trax as MISLABELED filler at end. NOT the same show as 1971-01-31 Washington, D.C. Emergency 5songs/36mins.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: #01-03 is an alternate sounding source for"End Unkind"1971-05-02 DC. The complete 1971-05-02 DC set may be found elsewhere.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: #01 DC 1971-05-02 also around on numerous OTHER versions of the show, but this is a unique sounding version/quality/mix.
::: FULL COMPARISONS were done with ALL released & ROIO Grin versions of all 4 of these songs. No other overlap except as noted here.
::: Similar, unique taping method/mike placement on these songs means they were probably done by TR (Grin's soundman?) who also taped 1971-01-31, 1971-05-02, 1971-09-19, +the 2 S/U East Coast 1971 sets. Likely there are more '71 Grin tapes around from this source than those 5 (mostly partial) sets + the other 3 misc. S/U songs above.
::: Grin's self-titled debut album (recorded '69-70) was issued 1st week of May '70 (NOT June as noted online), so out for a while by these versions.
::: "End Unkind"unissued when these versions were played. Song appeared on Nils Lofgren-Grin "1+1" album, recorded '71 but released Jan'72.
::: Neither Grin nor Nils Lofgren ever released versions of "Smokestack Lightning" or "Celebration".
::: It seems likely "Smokestack Lightning" was played regularly at gigs by Grin circa '70-71.
::: Grin played"Celebration"(?)regularly from '71-74, often as set closer. Title aka"Thunderbird". Boot CD"Walking The Line"title likely wrong. Anyone know title for sure?

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION & COMMENTS ON SOURCES
#01-03 "End Unkind" _ 1971-05-02 ::: Washington,DC,USA ::: National Mall ::: Washington Monument grounds
The National Sylvan Theater (outside) ::: May 2 Rally (Vietnam War Protest) - evening rally ::: M2-"SBD" (actually stereo stage mikes?)
>>> **only one song of set, but different, brighter sound than Mk6+7+8 versions of this show, although it does have some hiss**
>>> Mk7 1971-05-02"complete"set is stereo except THIS song is mono. This version is stereo, but so narrow there's no point in upgrading the full set version(s).
>>> Along with speed correction & other fixes, a huge volume drop in Lchan fixed, ~100 mostly micro dropouts fixed, a few clicks fixed & levels done & vocals stabilized in stereo image.
>>> This is one of the finest performances of this song to surface, so far, not least of which is just the INSANELY high energy levels of the vocals.

#04-05 "Smokestack Lightning" ::: 1971-xx-xx ::: East Coast(?), USA ::: unknown location/venue show #3 (UNIQUE VERSION/SHOW)
>>> Comparisons made. DEFINITELY NOT the same as other circulating 2 versions (1971-xx-xx East Coast,USA 2 unknown venues _ show #1 version // 1971-06-27).
>>> Almost certainly another east coast show, but not labeled as such.
>>> At the end, Nils says, "Thank you. We'll be back tonight".... Meaning another set (probably) OR an afternoon show & reappearing in evening OR?
>>> Large audience & closest in recording sound to 1971-05-02 but don't believe it is another song from that day, unless Grin performed in the afternoon as well.
>>> "x-rated version" compared to the other 2 known versions.
>>> "USA unknown location/venue show #3" (+#4/#5) noted here to differentiate from the "1971-xx-xx East Coast,USA 2 unknown venues"(10trax) uploads.

Recording Information ::: SBD+on stage microphones mixed to unknown stereo reel-to-reel recorder(s) -> master stereo reels -> ? -> unknown (low) generation analog tape -> unknown method digital transfer (to 44.1KHz/16bit wavs) -> "Mk1"flacs.

Remastering 2021-12-xx ::: unknown (low) generation flacs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove extreme&varied DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, MANY micro dropout & dullspot repairs + some major ones, levels were very overloaded in digital transfer & possibly before so ClipFix used for partial restoration/repair, volume adjustments, #01-03 +1-4%, 04-05 +1.1%, #06 +1.0%, #07-08 +0.7% pitch (speed) corrections made after frequency analysis & with CD pitch verification, NO equalisation (*except a couple of notches at 58/59KHz to reduce cyclical hum & a few other notches in talking to lower fluctuating hum), NO noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-12-xx.

Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 707 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! MANY thanks to DIMER ismokeweed for the Mk1 reseed! Sincere thanks to whomever uploads this for me. ::: Corrections welcome ::: While these kind of fit in with the Emergency club material, the repeat of the DC "End Unkind" from 1971-05-02 kinda made me decide a separate upload was in order. Hopefully someday (when I'm 80/90?) I'll get to hear the entire shows for the other 3 songs but holding my breath doesn't seem a wise course of action. RIPPIN' stuff. Can't understand why the Nils box didn't take the opportunity to give us more live Grin but maybe a miracle will happen & we'll get a dedicated box... Right now the best we do for our ears is this 2021/2022 GRIN FLOOD. Don't just Grin, smile & laugh & dance a little. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
