Grin ("Nils Lofgren - Grin")
1971-xx-xx ::: City and County of San Francisco, California, USA
Wally Heider Studios ::: 245 Hyde Street
"1+1" album outtake ::: M?-ST (24bit/48KHz)

~*~ Mk2 version, carefully remastered fixing various issues, with EQ & very lite NR ~*~

01. True Blue Love

Total Time ::: 2:57

::: VG/VG+ mono studio quality. Check sample for curiousity, but by the time you read this, you can already have the whole song.
::: Warts: YES. Distorted&muffled&hissy&noisy - but cool anyway 'til we get better - and 50 years is long enough already! (P.S. the Mk2 EQ version is somewhat better...).
CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the brighter Mk2 EQ+NR version. The muffled Mk1 NO EQ + lite NR version is available elsewhere.
::: Nils Lofgren - Grin "1+1", Grin's second album, was recorded in 1971 & issued January 1972.
::: "1+1" album was issued under artist/group name "Nils Lofgren-Grin" tho' the band was still called Grin, even on subsequent LPs.
::: "True Blue Love" was surely written by Nils Lofgren & the session produced by David Briggs.
::: As far as could be seen, "True Blue Love" isn't listed anywhere online as part of the Nils Logren/Grin known recordings.
::: This is from a 4 song tape. #01"True Blue Love". #02"Just To Have You" + #03"Moon Tears" both seem to be the album versions. #04"End Unkind" is the album version (so NOT uploadable) but has a VERY different vocal mix & a clean ending, without the "laughter" fadeout found on the album.
::: It is certain that some folks out there have a cleaner copy of this outtake, can YOU provide?
::: "So long as Grin keeps recording, there will be reason to smile." (source unknown '71 1st LP review).
::: Astonishing/sadly, Grin still doesn't even have their own Wikipedia page & only have a single paragraph in Nils' entry. WTF?

Recording Information ::: master mixdown studio reel -> ? (possibly acetates) -> numerous analogue tape generations -> unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, no Dolby.

Playback/remastering 2021 (Feb+Dec) ::: unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby off, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (48Hz/24bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual/minimal one-at-a-time glitch, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, 5.0% pitch (speed) fix with single pass after frequency analysis, differential equalisation applied (+ several notches to lower extreme hum), lite noise reduction used as the tape was an audio nightmare] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-12-xx. (NOTE: The transfer looked stereo but pretty much sounded mono & when just the better left channel was used, some of the horrific distortion disappeared, so that is what was done after remastering, hence the small file size. A third of the wav form was just noise, so judicious noise reduction was used, even on the Mk1, apologies to purists, this is a rare exception for me).

Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, piano, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 888 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! Sincere thanks to whomever uploads this for me. ::: Corrections welcome ::: "True Blue Love" fits in well with Side B "Dreamy Side" of the Nils Lofgren-Grin ‎"1+1" album, no doubt where it would have ended up if it hadn't been axed, presumably due to someone's editorial decision, there was certainly room for it on the record, which was released with only 35 minutes oif music. Having finally gotten to hear the Nils Lofgren box set with the Grin outtakes, I can say - great to hear, but a missed opportunity... Nils is even quoted about all the material they had when talking about box considerations - they clearly have LOADS. A couple of live Grin shows, and a mulititude of other outtakes & demos would have gone down freakin' well in this house, where the first Grin album has been on regular rotation for 50 years & the others get their share of airtime. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
